Aversa, a 47-year-old woman of non-Italian nationality suffering from a brain pathology, donated her organs: two patients were transplanted in Campania.

AVERSA (CASERTA) – A gesture of great generosity allowed the lives of two people to be saved in Campania. A 47-year-old woman, of non-Italian nationality, suffering from a serious brain pathology that led to brain death, donated her organs thanks to the choice of her family.

The multi-organ harvest was successfully performed at the “San Giuseppe Moscati” hospital in Aversa on the morning of 17 April 2024. The delicate operation was carried out with the commitment of the Medical and Nursing Team of the Anesthesia and Resuscitation Unit directed by doctor Eufrasia Silvestro.

Faced with the woman’s very serious clinical conditions, the Local Coordinator for blood sampling e organ donation and tissues, Umberto Di Vincenzo, has activated the procedure for organ donation. As soon as the Medical Director of the Unit was informed, he immediately convened the medical board to ascertain brain death.
The medical board examined the patient and, following the required neurological criteria, confirmed her death. The board was made up of Dr. Adriana Correra (doctor of the Health Directorate), Dr. Annalisa Fontana (anaesthesiologist/resuscitator) and Dr. Antonio Reia (neurologist).
The Aorn Cardarelli team in Naples took the 47-year-old’s liver, while the Salerno team took the kidneys. The organs donated by the woman from Aversa were successfully transplanted to patients awaiting a transplant in the Campania region.
Thanks to the generosity of the woman and her family, two people had the chance to receive a life-saving transplant.
