With the album “Out Of Time And Space” Ghost on Mars makes their debut from the capital, a quintet with progressive streaks which however develops a distinctly dark and melancholic sound in the wake of forefathers such as Katatonia and the more recent Soen. What is immediately noticeable is that their proposal is contaminated by modern sounds, which brings them closer to the Norwegians Leprous and their fellow countrymen Lacuna Coil, even if they differ from the latter in more intricate melodic lines and sound developments that vary from electronic to djent, with the rhythmic part played by Valerio Lippera (bass) and Andrea Alberati (drums) which in many passages stands out above all the rest.
The ten tracks that make up this debut are inspired by films, books and stories from the sci-fi and horror world, such as the first song “Beyond The Mist” (the lyrics are taken from the plot of the film “The Mist”) while other ideas they come from “Dylan Dog”, “Arrival”, “The Revenant”. Some repeated chords and certain interweavings between the two guitars of Fabio Valentini and Andrea Mataloni appear almost post-rock, with a hypnotic pace that presses into some crescendos but which at times does not fit into the general complex of the success of the pieces. The use of Moreno Sangermano’s voice is double, between clean passages (even if high and too strained) and growl verses (on the occasion of songs relating to horror themes, such as “Back From The Dead”).
The darkest moments are very interesting, such as the dark “Nocturnal” and “They”, where the nuances given by reverbs and arpeggios are well appreciated, while other pieces do not leave us particularly impressed for their originality or execution and this “Out Of Time And Space ” remains a debut with good production behind it (it is no coincidence that Willowtip Records takes great care in choosing new groups to include in its team) but without significant moments.
