Livorno, 18 April 2024 – Unions: Occupation at risk of strike and protest in Darsena Toscana

The provincial secretariats of Filt-Cgil and Uiltrasporti-Uil have proclaimed a strike by the fire guards at the port of Livorno for the entire working day of Monday 22 April.

Part of the 24 employees of the Sicurmare company who are responsible for manning the docks during the unloading of dangerous and flammable goods are at risk of redundancy and we cannot accept it.

What has a negative impact in terms of cutting work shifts is above all the decision of the Port Authority of Livorno to modify the ordinance which establishes the operational structure to be maintained in those docks where flammable goods are unloaded, a modification which impacts above all on activities carried out at the Costiero Gas quay. The new text – passed in recent months – provides that there must be 2 fire guards and 3 firefighters present on the dock: the original ordinance instead provided for the presence of 3 fire guards and 2 firefighters.

We therefore loudly ask that the number of guards at the fires return to the original one.

Also putting an important part of the work shifts at risk is the decision of the management of the Eni refinery in Stagno to proceed with the conversion into a biorefinery, with all that this entails in terms of reducing the fractionation of hydrocarbons and therefore reducing traffic of ships with this particular type of cargo.

Finally, the fire guards reiterate the need to reorganize the fire service in the port in order to increase the level of safety.

On April 22, Sicurmare employees will strike to defend their jobs and Filt-Cgil and Uiltrasporti-Uil will be at their side. On the occasion of the strike, a protest will also be carried out in front of the entrance to the Darsena Toscana terminal.
