Municipality of Crotone – Memory

“The game of Humanity” was inaugurated yesterday evening in the area in front of the PalaMilone, the work commissioned by the city of Crotone and created by the master goldsmith Gerardo Sacco as a tribute to the victims of the Steccato di Cutro tragedy, but also an invitation to humanity and hospitality.

Present at the ceremony were the mayor Voce, the prefect Franca Ferraro, the councilor for social policies Filly Pollinzi and maestro Sacco.

Civil and military authorities, the mayor, were present of Cutro Ceraso, councilors and city councilors and numerous citizens.

The ceremony was enlivened by the sweet singing of the Polyphonic Choir of the “Anna Frank” school directed by Professor Luisa Floccari.

The work is not a memorial but a real “game”, one of the oldest and most popular, that of “Hopscotch”.

To symbolize the memory of the children who disappeared in the tragedy, a pair of shoes “the ones I saw on the Steccato beach, the ones they didn’t take off so they could play. I started from this image to create the work, and then the colored numbers and finally the sun rising inside the word Charitas, the motto of S. Francesco di Paola, patron saint of Calabria” said an emotional Gerardo Sacco.

Mayor Voce recalled the days of pain but also of the great humanity shown by the city of Crotone in the face of a tragedy that shook consciences “no one was spared in those days. The work that the master created reminds us of the right of all children to be calm, to be happy. I like to imagine at this moment that those children who are no longer here are playing on this work” said the mayor.

“Children must have the right to be children, regardless of their nationality, where they come from, where they live” and addressing the children of the choir “I wish you to be happy children and to become beautiful people who will be able to do important things for the city of Crotone” said the prefect Franca Ferraro.

Councilor Pollinzi who promoted the initiative underlined the sharing that took place with maestro Sacco to create a work that would become a symbol of the values on which our Republic is based, values of welcome and solidarity. “Let’s look more at children and we will have a better world” said the councilor.

Councilor Pollinzi also recalled that maestro Sacco will donate the compensation for the creation of the work to the children who are guests of the reception center for asylum seekers in Isola Capo Rizzuto
