The Municipality of Udine together with Hera redevelops the energy services of 193 public buildings

During 2023, the Municipality of Udine entrusted HSE, Hera Servizi Energia, with the management of the energy services of the properties owned by the Municipality for a period of 15 years, during which the group will also have to deal with the redevelopment of the heating and electricity under management.

Within this project, the provision was recently passed which approves the start of work for the second lot of the intervention, which involves the redevelopment of the structures and systems for energy services of 56 public buildings, including schools, sports facilities , municipal offices and structures open to the public. The value of this lot amounts to approximately 5 million euros. These interventions are in addition to those already approved last December, worth 1.5 million euros, the construction sites of which are already operational and will be completed by this summer.

The municipal administration announces that the measures decided, thanks to the active collaboration of Hera and the municipal technical offices, respond to multiple needs: energy saving, environmental sustainability, the reduction of polluting emissions, the technologically advanced redevelopment of buildings and municipally owned schools. The package of interventions will also make it possible to reduce the budget item allocated to energy supply, thus reusing the savings for further initiatives serving the community. An indirect benefit which will therefore involve all the towns and citizens of Udine.

The projects in this lot concern the energy requalification of the structures and heating systems of buildings such as, for example, the Rodari, Carducci, Alberti, Sviluppo Julia, D’Orlandi, Friz, Nievo, IV Novembre, Pellico and San Domenico primary schools , the Cocolar and Sacheburache nursery school, the Cas, Centazzo, Forte, Gabelli, Laipacco, Fermi, Marconi and Pecile nursery schools, the Benedetti sports hall together with the tennis facilities and other sports facilities, as well as further municipal buildings including some accommodation welfare and offices dedicated to the public.

The first 9 most urgent projects were approved as mentioned at the end of 2023 and are still underway. The aim is to improve the thermal efficiency of the buildings of the Girardini primary school, the Zardini and the Ada Negri school with their gyms, the Ippolito Nievo, the Valussi lower secondary school, and two other fundamental sites in the urban fabric Udine such as Palazzo Morpurgo and the Joppi Civic Library. The redevelopment of the refrigeration plants, i.e. the cooling system, the Palamostre and the Castle Museum are also added to the calculation of the works.

The numbers of the intervention

In total, thanks to its interventions, HSE will reduce energy consumption by 15%, which corresponds to 1.4 million kWh per year, or the electricity consumption of approximately 4,500 families. To date, in fact, the energy requirement amounts to 18.9 GWh/year, of which 14.7 GWh/year is thermal energy coming from methane and diesel and 4.2 GWh/year is from district heating. After the interventions, however, consumption will amount to 16.2 GWh/year, of which 12.3 GWh/year of thermal energy from methane and diesel (-15.9%) and 3.9 GWh/year from district heating: ( -6.5%).

Thanks to the interventions and management of HSE, 33.7 million kWh of methane gas, 3.8 million kWh of district heating and 1.4 million kWh of electricity will be saved (corresponding to the annual energy needs of 4,506 families) and consumption will they will reduce a total of 15%.

Overall, as part of the concession entrusted to Hera Servizi Energia, the Municipality has planned 108 interventions for 8 and a half million euros, which must be carried out within 3 years in 193 public buildings. To these works will be added the creation of new photovoltaic systems, for a total power of 228 kW. In total, 63 social housing and offices, 46 schools, 34 municipal offices, 31 sports facilities and 19 cultural halls are affected by the interventions.
