Viareggio elections: Probable vote in May 2025

As can be deduced from the increase in conflict in the media and on social channels between the majority and the opposition, the various groups are already preparing for the next round of elections.
To use an example from the world of cycling – also in view of the next departure of the Giro from Torre del Lago – the sprinters’ teams are trying to take positions at the top of the group to launch the mayoral candidate’s sprint.

One might think a little early if, as the majority claims, the vote will be held in 2026, but the increasingly frequent attacks in recent weeks and the fact that the center right has already made the candidate official have made us reflect on the future date of the elections.

We will vote in May 2025, our hypothesis

Some, including circles close to Mayor Del Ghingaro, maintain that the elections will be postponed to May 2026, others believe that they will be held in perfect conjunction with the expiry of the five-year mandate and therefore in September 2025, while there are those – like us at Versiliatoday – who believe that the administrative elections of Viareggio will be held in May 2025, shortening the council period by 4 months.

On what basis do we support the thesis of elections in May 2025?

Before talking about a date, it is necessary to say that by law the local elections must be carried out in a time window that goes from May 15th to June 15th run-offs included.
Furthermore, it is now common thought, as well as the will of the parliamentary majority, that of bring the electoral rounds that were postponed in 2020 and 2021 due to covid within the legal window.

Precisely for this reason, many argue that it will be May 2026, extending the mandate of Mayor Giorgio del Ghingaro by a further 7 months… after the 4 months of extension received in the first mandate.
This belief is given by the fact that the Syndicature must have a duration of 5 years.

1. The rules of the game are written with ordinary law

Unlike a constitutional law, which is very difficult to change, the system of rules that guide the electoral rounds are regulated by an ordinary law which, as was modified in 2020 and 2021 by lengthening the elections and establishing alternative dates for the elections, can also undergo the reverse path.

2. Local motivations

We find it singular, if the elections were to be held in 2026, that any team would present its candidate for Mayor 2 years before the election.
The centre-right of Viareggio, on the other hand, has presented a unitary candidacy in recent weeks Ciro Costagliola.
Again to continue with the cycling metaphor made at the beginning, too early to start the sprint. You risk arriving tired and worn out by your opponents (and perhaps even by some crafty wingmen) at the last 50 metres.

Coming out too soon – especially on the minority side – means giving a strategic advantage to the adversaries who govern today and who will presumably seek a certain continuity (at least operational) with the current administration.

Evidently – this is what we support – the center right of Viareggio, led by Debora Bergamini (a leading figure in national politics) may already have indiscretions that we don’t know about.

3. Political motivations

We have heard from some parliamentarians from different camps and the first thing they tell us is that the desire is to bring administrative matters within the scope of the law.
We believe the definitive green light will be given after reading the results of the European elections, to understand the margins for maneuver on the board by the majority.

Why would May 2025, in our opinion, be preferred to May 2026 then?

The main strategic and political motivation is that postponing this electoral round – which in any case included over 1000 municipalities – would also have similar knock-on effects on next roundthe one of 2021 that would be found again to vote in 2027 instead of 2026.

Someone will ask: “Is that so”?

In the round that voted in 2021, 20 capital, 6 regional and 14 provincial municipalities will be involved: Benevento, BolognaCarbonia, Caserta, Cosenza, Grosseto, Isernia, Latina, Milan, NaplesNovara, Pordenone, Ravenna, Rimini, RomeSalerno, Savona, TurinTrieste and Varese.

If it were moved to 2027, it would end up being merged into the policies!

Taking into account that the approval of those who govern is physiologically destined to decline, if half of Italians also voted in local elections, as well as in political elections, if it went badly for the Meloni government… it would go really badly!
Having large cities vote at the same time as political elections is a risk that no majority would take after 5 years of government.
If the big cities voted in 2026 instead, if political and/or consensus problems arose, there would still be time and a way to recover.

The scenario that will lead to the vote in Viareggio and the other municipalities in the same round is a plausible hypothesis following a political analysis on which the reader will certainly be able to form his own idea.
