Weather alert, May 1st of extreme bad weather: high risk of flooding

Italy is currently experiencing a warm pre-frontal reminder of the cyclone arriving from the Atlantic Ocean: temperatures are rising sharply, to the point that they have reached well +31°C in Pordenone and Guidonia, +30°C in Rome and Florence, +29°C in Pisa, Udine, Latina and Cassino, +28°C in Verona, Siena, Viterbo, Frosinone, Tivoli, Avellino and Benevento, +27°C in Padua, Perugia, Trento and Bolzano. These are summer temperatures, very high for the period, precisely due to the call of hot air rising from North Africa towards Italy and the Balkans along the eastern edge of the disturbance.

The live satellite images clearly show the rise of storm clouds over the western Mediterranean from the Maghreb towards southern France, Sardinia and the western sectors of Italy:

The model maps Moloch of the CNR-ISAC allow you to highlight the weather situation live. The map with today’s maximum temperatures illustrates the hottest areas in Italy at the moment:

A strong south-eastern circulation is already active regarding winds. The scirocco has already reached i 72km/h in Trapani and blows forcefully between the Sicilian Channel and the Egadi islands:

In the afternoon-evening today the storms will rise further, involving the whole of the area Sardinia and touching western Sicily, with the first rains also in the North/West, as can be seen in the appropriate map:

Weather alert May 1st: extreme bad weather throughout Italy

Tomorrow, Wednesday 1 May, the weather situation will worsen sharply throughout Italy, due to the transit of the cyclone coming from the Atlantic Ocean. The currents will remain southerly throughout the day, less intense than today but still full of humidity such as to bring an enormous load of precipitation throughout the country:

The transit of the cold front, with the complicity of bad weather, will cause temperatures to plummet throughout the country except for the far south, the Ionian areas and the lower Adriatic. It will be a May 1st still hot in Abruzzo, Molise, Puglia, Basilicata Jonica, Calabria and Sicily, but it will also be cold in the North/West, in the central Tyrrhenian regions, in Sardinia and Campania:

The most serious element of the bad weather on Wednesday 1 May will be rainfall. We will have torrential rains particularly in Piedmont, but the storms will also hit Liguria, Tuscany, Umbria, Lazio and Sardinia from the morning, with bad weather spread across the whole country:

weather alert May 1st morning

In the afternoon-evening the bad weather will persist in the North/West, with torrential rain in Piedmont, Valle d’Aosta, Lombardy, Liguria, Tuscany and in general throughout the Centre/North. The risk of heavy floods is high, particularly in the North/West: they will fall further 200mm of rain in a single day in Piedmont, where all the water basins are already at critical levels after a very rainy period in recent months. There is a high probability of floods and overflows for rivers and lakes.

weather warning May 1st evening

Snow will return at altitude, very abundant beyond 1,700/1,800 meters of altitude. In the Western Alps the snow accumulations are already exceptional for the period, and this latest large snow layer (more than a meter of fresh snow will fall) will further increase the snow surplus and guarantee large water reserves for the coming months.

And it doesn’t end there at all. The bad weather will continue on Thursday 2nd and Friday 3rd May, very intense across much of Italy. But we’ll talk more about this in future updates. Meanwhile, all the competent authorities, civil protection and air force, have launched theweather alert for the next few hours:
