Aortic stenosis training and information in Piacenza

Aortic stenosis is a heart condition that occurs when one of the heart’s four valves narrows or becomes blocked. If this happens, decreases the flow of oxygenated blood which from the organ reaches the rest of the body through the main artery of our organism. As a result, the heart’s left ventricle, which pumps blood through the aortic valve, has to work harder. This can lead to a thickening of the muscle wall, over time, a weakening of its ability to contract.

Aortic stenosis, one of the most common valve diseases

There Aortic stenosis is one of the most common valve diseases and can occur, typically in older people, due to degenerative calcifications or congenital defects (a situation more common in young people). Symptoms can vary depending on the severity of the narrowing and include palpitations, chest pain, fatigue and shortness of breath during physical activity.

Aortic stenosis, who it affects

It affects 3.4% of the over 75 population: 75.6% of these patients are symptomatic. In severe cases, aortic stenosis can lead to heart failure and even death. If not adequately treated, it evolves very quickly: approximately one person can die within two years of the onset of symptoms. Early diagnosis and rapid initiation of treatment, therefore, are crucial factors.

Aortic stenosis, training and information

The training and information program that will take place on Saturday focuses on this theme April 20, 2024 at the Best Western Park Hotel in Piacenza in Strada Valnure 7 entitled CONNECT for TAVIn (Call On Network Now & Expand Care Together).

Aortic stenosis, the scientific guide

The meeting was held under the scientific guidance of Daniela Aschieri, Director of CardiologyAnd Luigi Vignaliresponsible for Interventional cardiology at the Parma hospitalis aimed at general practitioners and cardiologists.

Doctor Daniela Aschieri

The latest guidelines from the European Society of Cardiology on the management of aortic stenosis – underlines the professional from Piacenza – they identify in Tavi (Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation) the most suitable treatment for patients over 75 years of age, but also for younger subjects with specific clinical anatomical conditions. This is a minimally invasive medical procedure that allows a new aortic valve to be implanted into the heart through a small hole in the skin, usually in the groin. It is an alternative to traditional cardiac surgery, which allows for a better and quicker recovery of the patient after the operation.”

The use of therapy in the Region

In the Emilia-Romagna Region there is a wide use of this therapy compared to the national average 52% compared to 47%, with 214 procedures performed per million inhabitants). “And yet – highlights Dr. Aschieri – TAVI is still a largely underused procedure: the patients treated, in fact, are around 50% of those who, according to the guidelines, would be candidates for the treatment. It is therefore important to give an important signal, since, to guarantee adequate access to care, a network must be created that involves the family doctor and the local cardiologist. In fact, these professional figures are the first points of contact with the patient who can guarantee timely diagnosis and treatment.”

The in-depth day’s program will provide an in-depth overview of the optimal management of patients with aortic stenosis: guidelines, patient selection and diagnostic process, optimization of treatment, sustainability of therapy. Participants will also be involved in practical diagnostic simulation sessions.

Objective

Our ambition is to reduce the distance between hospital and territory – concludes the professional – increase the technical-cultural skills of the network and develop a common governance model among all professionals that facilitates the reduction of waiting lists as well as rapid access to treatment”.
