Plane crash on Legnone: the Municipality of Colico asks for damages

Two years after the plane crash that occurred on Monte Legnone, the Municipality of Colico is moving to protect its interests and its territory.

In recent days, in fact, the Council of Mayor Monica Gilardi approved a resolution concerning “Assignment of assignment for legal assistance, investigation and preparation of any action requesting compensation for damages suffered by the territory and from the environment following the plane crash that occurred on Monte Legnone in March 2022”.

It was March 16th two years ago when an Aermacchi M-346 training aircraft crashed into the rock face, a few moments after the two pilots had ejected. One of the two occupants of the jet, the British Dave Ashley, lost his life in the accident; while his colleague Gianpaolo Goattin was recovered by the air ambulance in good condition.

Beyond the human drama, which will always remain in the memory of Colic residents, the environmental consequences, linked to the crash of the plane, the dispersion of potentially harmful substances for the environment and the presence of wreckage in a mountain area, should not be overlooked. . And it is on this aspect that the actions of the Council are concentrated, which has decided to entrust the task of legal assistance to the Bernardilex firm of Colico.

Among the considerations that led to the adoption of the resolution, the fact stands out that “since March 2022, since an air disaster occurred on Monte Legnone, near Valorga, the Municipality of Colico has not received any compensation or fair compensation, nor repair the damage caused to the environment, the territory and the image of the town of Colico”. Added to this is that “the wreck and the related scrap of materials, including dangerous ones, were left abandoned for a considerable period of time, and transported by atmospheric events, inevitably compromising the environmental matrices, the landscape and the safe, free and pleasant travel of the paths of our territory”.

A situation that is not easy to manage, also considering that, as is clarified in the resolution, “despite the requests and warnings to the company that owns the plane, after two years, this Municipality has never been considered or given attention either by the owners or by the Competent authorities, following the plane crash”.

Given these premises, the Council “considered it necessary to make use of legal assistance in order to assert its reasons and interests in any lawsuits that may arise from the aforementioned air disaster”, recalling that “even extrajudicially it is necessary to be assisted in the necessary requests to be forwarded promptly to those responsible and to the relevant insurance companies”. All with the awareness that “any inertia of this Administration could cause prejudice and damage to the Institution”.
