Here’s how it works and what changes

Turin says stop smoking outdoors within five meters of other people, without their consent. This is established by a new resolution of the city council, which modifies the urban police regulation by introducing a “courtesy distance for smokers”.

The new rules will come into force in a couple of weeks, after the publication of the resolution on the Municipality’s noticeboard.

What the new resolution says:

  • Stop smoking outdoors: You will no longer be able to smoke anywhere outdoors if there are other people nearby (less than 5 metres), unless you have their explicit consent.
  • Smoking is prohibited in the presence of children and pregnant women: as already provided for in the previous regulation, the ban on smoking in the presence of minors and pregnant women remains confirmed.
  • Ban extended to all smoking products: the ban concerns not only traditional cigarettes, but also cigars, pipes, heated tobacco and electronic cigarettes.
  • Sanctions: anyone who does not comply with the ban risks a fine of 100 euros.

Stop smoking outdoors: cwhere the new norm was born

The proposal to introduce a “courtesy distance” for smokers was put forward by Silvio Viale, councilor of the Radicals.

The objective of the new resolution is to protect the health of non-smokers and promote greater sensitivity towards mutual respect in public spaces.

The approval of the resolution was welcomed by various associations that fight to combat smoking, while it aroused criticism from some representatives of the tobacconist categories and managers of public places.
