Abruzzo, 2023 is a black year for mountain accidents: 197 rescue operations

There are 197 rescue interventions for mountain accidents and six victims in 2023. Alpine Rescue data: in 78% of cases men recovered.

ACCIDENTS IN THE MOUNTAINS – One hundred and ninety-seven rescue missions completed: in 47% of cases, subjects were recovered unharmed or with minor injuries, while six, even at 3.2%, there were deaths. These are the data relating to 2023, spread by Alpine and Speleological Rescue Abruzzo, body that carries out technical rescues – medical and otherwise – in mountain environments, in caves and in inaccessible environments. The Abruzzo interventions are equal to 1.6% of the 12,349 missions carried out term in Italy, for a total of 12,365 people rescuedof which 7,622 injured and 491 dead.
The various activities carried out with the National Health Service – 118 System, were aimed at guaranteeing immediate rescue and assistance to injured subjects, to people in difficulty in various ways, to subjects in imminent danger of life or at risk of health evolution, to research and
rescue of the missing and recovery of the fallen. In Abruzzo, the causes behind the 197 rescue missions follow the national trend: in first place the fall, in second place the loss of orientation, in third place the general one incapacity of the person seeking help, followed by illness and exhaustion.

For several years, interventions to support people on mountain bikes have been constantly growingstill remaining in second place compared to hiking and ahead of mountaineering, ski mountaineering and track skiing. In 78% of cases men were recovered, while the age group follows a decreasing trend starting from 40-50, with smaller shares for the over 50s: 40-50 19%; 30-40 16%; 20-30 16%; 60-70 16%; 50-60 14%; 10-20 12%; 70-80 6%; over 80 1%.
