Changing the face of the city with a digital perspective and creating suitable environments to create ecosystems for innovation, capable of attracting talent and resources. These are the pillars on which the strategy of Fabrizio Ferrandelli, councilor of the Palermo municipal council, with responsibility for innovation and youth policies, is based.

Innovation is a necessary challenge

Ferrandelli considers innovation to be a necessary challenge, “because it concerns all citizens but is aimed above all at the new generations”. Having joined the council that administers Palermo a few weeks ago, Ferrandelli imagines concentrating his first efforts through Sispi, the instrumental company of the Municipality. “With the funds arriving from the Recovery Plan, Sispi will be able to implement projects that will allow citizens to have as little bad life as possible. I am thinking of services, digitalisation, the computerization of payment processes via apps. It will thus be possible to dematerialize some of the processes, increase the level of services and allow people to obtain online, even from home, much of the documentation that is the responsibility of the municipal administration”. Ultimately, this is the face of innovation that is aimed directly at all citizens.

At the Cantieri Culturale a Hub to attract talents from all over the world

Innovation is also the ability to imagine new paths of identity and professional construction, nurturing ecosystems of small, medium and large start-ups that are capable of creating development and innovation. “We have allocated the economic resources necessary to modernize, also from an infrastructural point of view, the space of the three naves to the Zisa Cultural Shipyards. It is a place designed to become a hub serving to bring together young talents, businesses and create networks. Palermo must overcome its provincialism. The challenge is a challenge of international connection. We have the great ambition of being able to connect with all the experiences on a global level.”

The former Ducrot shipyards are not the only hub or incubator that the municipal administration wants to set up. There is talk of another site in the former Tirrenia Deposits at the Port of Palermo. “We are talking with the Port Authority – explains Ferrandelli – and we have certainly identified the financing lines. We want to work on this, but if it isn’t that space, another one will be identified.”
