Trento, RSA workers demonstrate with the Fenalt union: “Exhausting shifts due to staff shortages”

It took place yesterday, under the headquarters of the Health Department of the Autonomous Province of Trentoa demonstration organized by the union Fenalt to protest against the daily problems of the operators serving in the retirement homes: their job is very heavy and poorly paid.

“I am making a series of visits to RSAs to meet workers and directors and understand what their needs are. In June I will take stock with my experts and my structure, and at that point I will also be able to convene a table with the trade union forces. This is the commitment that I want to take on and that I want to carry forward with seriousness in respect of those who work at the service of the elderly”, declared the councilor Mario Toninawho came down to greet the demonstrators.

But he also added: “But with the problem of the birth rate decline and the aging of the population, I am convinced that retirement homes are not the only way forward. We need prevention right from school if we want to address the issue in a long-term perspective.”

Maurizio Valentinotti, general secretary of Fenalt, reminded him that prevention must also be done in the workplace, because due to exhausting shifts, due to staff shortages, accidents and occupational diseases are increasing. The demands concern meal vouchers, three-shift allowances and investments in the sector to make it more attractive for young people too.

“Today, between osa, OSS and auxiliaries, there are just over 2,000 full-time operators in service, which reaches 3,500 if we also consider part-time workers, compared to over 4,500 assisted people, the majority of whom are not self-sufficient or suffer from serious psychiatric pathologies,” he commented Roberto Moserdeputy general secretary of Fenalt.

Again Moser: “The retirement home sector in Trentino collects 225 million euros a year, between public contributions and private fees. We ask ourselves whether it is not possible to achieve economies of scale and management savings by centralizing some services and reducing the representative bodies to invest some of this money in improving working conditions”.

Moser concluded: “The waiting lists are too long and there are delays in the disbursement of the Covid premium. It is necessary to adapt the contract to that of Apss to stem the hemorrhage of nurses and the phenomenon of workers fleeing in search of better conditions”.
