Moments of tension in the emergency room of the Rossano hospital, in the province of Cosenza, following an attack perpetrated by a North African inmate, brought to the facility due to the consequences of a fight with other inmates, who attempted to attack the staff health worker on duty.
This was reported by the Sappe union according to which “only the prompt intervention of the penitentiary policemen on escort duty averted the worst even if, one of them to whom all our solidarity goes – say the deputy general secretary of Sappe Giovanni Battista Durante and the secretary regional Francesco Ciccone – suffered very serious injuries, with a fracture and a prognosis of 30 days.
The prisoner in question, who in the past had already been the protagonist of other disturbances in various institutions in the region – say Durante and Ciccone – was only stopped thanks to the cunning and professionalism of the escorting policemen, averting the worst and restoring safety and security. the order necessary to guarantee public service in the hospital structure. Unfortunately – they add – in the Rossano prison, in recent months, mainly inmates continue to be sent to prison who, in their institutions of origin, appear to have promoted similar events. These are subjects who are difficult to manage, some of whom have already been removed from the Rossana prison for reasons of order and security and inexplicably reassigned there after a few months. Another serious problem of the Rossana prison is given by the presence of many inmates suffering from psychiatric problems, many of which are considered quite serious, despite the fact that there is no territorial mental health structure for their management”.
“For this reason – underline the two union representatives – we ask the Department of Penitentiary Administration to review the classification of the institutions as soon as possible, dividing them, within the region, into maximum security, medium security and attenuated custody, and providing adequate mental health joints, in agreement with the provincial health authorities”.
