Basement of Old Town, everything to be redone. Within the end of the year. To avoid infiltrations into homes and dangers to the safety of pedestrians and cyclists. This was announced by the councilor for public works, Massimiliano Marzo, during yesterday afternoon’s question time at the Municipality, in response to a question from the Fdi group leader, Paolo Santonastaso, who asked for clarification on the times and methods of intervention in light of the numerous accidents recorded in recent months between via San Carlo, via San Giovanni, piazza Duomo, via Ferrante and via Mazzocchi.
«Those mentioned are just some streets in the historic center – the opposition councilor points out in his speech – which represent a constant danger for those who travel on foot or on two wheels. Between sinkings and depressions due to poor maintenance and also to some poorly executed excavation work, much of the paving is in fact reduced to a pitiful condition.”
The solution for councilor Marzo lies in the three-year framework agreement on maintenance, worth almost two and a half million euros, which will be awarded shortly. «Next April 4th – he explains – we will know how many companies participated in the tender. The company that wins the works will also have to guarantee the restoration of the paving of the entire historic centre. It is written in the specifications. They will have to remove the broken plugs and replace them, seal the joints and fill the holes. An amount of approx 450 thousand euros for these interventions. The goal is to complete the work by December.” Also among the streets involved via Pollio, via Crispo, via Sant’Antida And Corso Trieste. Then on the agenda is a question from the councillor Forza Italia, Donato Aspromonteon the security emergency in the hamlets of San Leucio and Vaccheria.
«When will the video surveillance cameras be activated? – asks the councilor – and above all, why isn’t the evening patrolling of the local police, which currently ends at 10pm, extended by a few hours? Residents and traders are worried about the frequent thefts and ask for greater attention from the Municipality on the case.”
«There are now only 62 local police officers – he says March – and they are already working overtime to guarantee services. For video surveillance we are at a good point. Thanks to three approved projects we managed to obtain funding for approximately 230 cameras: 100 will be positioned within the project financing for the installation of public lighting, another 51 fall within the Poc legality while further 80 plantswhose project has just been accepted, will be used to combat the illegal dumping of waste.”
Also under the spotlight are the inconveniences reported by residents of via dei Cotonieri in Vaccheria for an old pipeline which for about two years has been recording losses which are flowing into private cellars. «This is a hygienic, health and environmental problem – he says Aspromonte – which can no longer be postponed in view of the summer”.
«I carried out an inspection seven months ago – said Marzo – and verified that there is a need to create one new sewer pipe. This is work that must be carried out as part of a broader intervention which involves the reconstruction of the entire network of underground services.”
