Thursday March 28, 2024 – Holy Thursday – at 10 amin Cathedral basilica the bishop of Padua, mgr. Claudio Cipolla presided over the Chrism Mass or Chrism Mass, solemn celebration in which they were blessed are the oils (oil of the sick, oil of catechumens) and consecrated the holy chrism; oils which will then be used during the year for the celebration of the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, Holy Orders and the Anointing of the Sick.

The Chrism Mass is also the moment in which the entire presbytery gathers around the bishop to renew the promises pronounced on the day of priestly ordination, also visibly demonstrating everyone’s communion in the service of the Church.

The Holy Thursday collection was allocated this year to a parish experiencing particular economic difficulty, the first sign of the project to support parishes in difficulty – Let there be equality – announced among the diocesan signs in the Post-synodal letter Let’s start again from Cana.

The oils that were blessed during the Chrism Mass were donated this year by the parishes of Santa Maria Assunta of Arquà Petrarca and Santa Maria Assunta of Galzignano Terme. A part, offered by the Padua section of the CNA, was obtained from the olive trees planted in the garden located next to the site of the Capaci massacre – garden of memory – in memory of the judges Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino, the policemen of their escorts and of those who lost their lives in the battle against the mafia.
