Incredible at Massimino, Catania throws themselves away: victory at Giugliano
Descriptive text here

Late night at Massimino for Catania. The stadium without fans, the rossozzurri without character. Defeat is the most obvious consequence. Giugliano wins the Catania stadium with a result of 3-2. Bertotto’s men upset the balance of a match that had gone well for their opponents after Cianci’s goal scored at the start of the match. In the second half, however, everything changes: two goals from Salvemini, in between those scored by Ciuferri and Bouah, rewrite the history of the match. Many refereeing episodes were contested, in particular by the Zeoli boys, who sink further and further down, the peak of a crisis that seems unstoppable.

The hosts play with 4-3-1-2. Furlan is preferred in goal, with Bouah, Monaco, Castellini and Celli completing the defensive unit; in midfield Zammarini, Quaini and Welbeck; Peralta operates behind Di Carmine and Cianci. Among the guests, Russo, extreme defender, also plays in defense: Valdesi, Cargnelutti, Caldore and Yabre; in the middle Romano, Berardocco and Giorgione; in front of Ciuferri, Salvemini and Di Dio.

The first half opens immediately with a goal from Catania. After just a minute of play Cianci takes advantage of Zammarini’s cross and heads the ball past Russo. Giugliano’s first attempt was recorded in the 9th minute: Romano tried a shot from distance, the ball ended up on Castellini before touching the top corner. Danger averted for the rossozzurri who breathed another sigh of relief ten minutes later when a turn by Salvemini found the deflection of Furlan with the ball first touching the goal line, then hitting the post and finally finishing its carom in the arms of the Catania goalkeeper. In the 27th and 36th minutes, Catania’s chances with Di Carmine and Cianci ended in nothing, the same outcome in the 44th minute for Giugliano with Giorgione’s attempt, a long-range shot that went wide.

The second half opens like the first half but with reversed roles. In fact, in the 47th minute the visiting team manages to equalize with Salvemini: Welbeck misses a clearance thus favoring the yellow-blue striker who goes to the conclusion, the ball ends up in the net passing between Furlan’s legs. In the 53rd minute Campania were once again dangerous, this time with a right-footed shot from Ciuferri neutralized by the Rossazzurri goalkeeper. A minute later Cianci is held by an opposing defender and remains without a shirt, but the referee allows him to continue. Around the 57th minute the round of substitutions began on both sides and a little later, in the 69th minute, Giugliano scored the opening goal. Ciuferri scored the 2-1 with a header. Catania didn’t lose the disadvantage right away and within two minutes it was already 2-2. The home team’s equalizer was scored by Bouah. In the 80th minute Catania has a good opportunity with Welbeck who saves the newly substitute Baldi, called to replace the injured Russo. Giugliano responds with De Sena who first attempts the conclusion from a free kick but hits the wall, then tries with his head but misses the target. With 5 minutes left to go, Zammarini ends up on the ground inside the opponent’s penalty area and claims a penalty kick, but the referee does not agree and warns the player. The end of the match was fiery: in the 87th minute Salvemini gave Giugliano the lead again and a few moments later Cicerelli was sent off for protesting. Catania down by a goal and with 10 men. After six minutes of added time the final whistle blew.
