Raise awareness i construction workers on the job security and above all on the importance of complaint and of report where they encounter working conditions that put their lives at risk, such as the lack of adoption of personal protective equipment and failure to comply with the rules. This is the objective of the entitled campaign “We care about your safety. If you fear you won’t be able to work safely, call!”which was launched by the regional secretary of Filca Cisl Sicily, Paolo D’Anca and by the general secretary of Filca Cisl Catania, Giuseppe Famianoduring the general council of Catania, where the state of the local works, which have been at a standstill for too long, was also taken into account.
“We wanted to activate a telephone number 342 0908657 – explain D’Anca and Famiano – to ask workers to do their part to safeguard their lives. A tool that can be useful to stop this trail of blood. In Sicily in the last 5 years there have been 406 unrelated deaths, which means that every 4 days a worker has lost his life. The silence of the regional government on the issue of safety in the workplace is absurd, let’s not forget that in Sicily there are only 64 labor inspectors (for 360 thousand companies) and Catania has 9 in total, of which only 2 in the construction (for 90 thousand companies). Workers are not numbers, but they are lives“.
“It’s a silent massacre – they continue – which is unworthy of a civilized country. Urgent measures are needed, more inspectors and more occupational doctors need to be hired. We need to increase the staff of the judiciary, because the processing times for fatal accidents have now become long. In these days – they add – a sentence was issued by the Court of Catania 14 years after the death of a worker who fell from scaffolding and justice was only partially done because the employer died in the meantime. This is the demonstration of the length of the processes during the general council – they continue – we took stock of some local works such as the subway which represents an important investment for the future of the city. After the laying of the first stone for the Misterbianco-Paternò lot of the Catania Metro, contracted to the SIS Stabile Consortium, there was a failure to start up the other two subway lots, namely the Stesicoro – Airport section, awarded to the Medil Stabile Consortium for an amount of over 450 million euros, the start of which was expected between the end of 2022 and the beginning of 2023, and to date everything is still at a standstill. And then the Monte Po’ – Misterbianco section, awarded in the first half of 2021 again to the Consorzio Stabile Medil, and despite the expectations of the construction site starting by 2021, to date there is nothing new. In the next few days we will ask for a meeting with the representatives of the Circumetnea railway to address the critical issues that are causing these unjustified delays. We are worried because the failure to start these two important construction sites could jeopardize the entire metro project, which risks becoming yet another unfinished project”.
Filca Cisl, in the presence of the general secretary Paolo D’Anca, then elected two other members of the territorial secretariat of Syracuse-Ragusa, led by Nunzio Turrisi, who are Marilena Tuè and Cristian Tribulato.
