Mourning in the world of Sardinian catering, farewell to chef Nicolo Pomata

Nicolo Pomata, chef and owner of the Da Nicolo restaurant on the Battellieri seafront in Carlofortem, opened in 1969, has died at the age of 79. The restaurateur, father of chef Luigi Pomata, was struck down by a sudden illness for which he was admitted to the Brotzu hospital of Cagliari after an emergency transport by air ambulance from Carloforte. Nicolo Pomata was considered one of the kings of Sardinian catering. He had served well-known personalities, Italian and foreign, including Giorgio Armani and Gianni Agnelli.

The King of Sardinian catering

For fifty years Nicolo Pomata was the king of catering on the island of San Pietro, in the south-west of Sardinia. His children also followed his path: Antonello and Maddalena who remained with him in Carloforte, while Luigi Pomata – a well-known face of cooking on TV – brought that tradition to his well-known restaurant in the center of Cagliari. His linguine alla Nicolo, capers, tuna, olives and pecorino, are a sought-after delicacy that became famous throughout Italy already in 1973, so much so that they were cited among the best one hundred pastas by the Barilla Guide.
