The X-Files is one of those series capable of building a very solid fan base over time, quickly transforming into a real cult. A success that, in many ways, changed the television landscape of the science fiction and investigative genre. After months of silence following rumors about a possible reboot, important updates are finally arriving that rekindle fans’ enthusiasm.
The series debuted in the 1990s in a less than favorable time slot, on Friday evenings, and seemed almost doomed to failure. Against all odds, X-Files, however, managed to conquer the public episode after episode, becoming one of the most influential productions of the decade along with another historic FOX title, The Simpsons. Despite production difficulties, attempts at cinematic expansion and the cast’s desire, on several occasions, to move on, The X-Files has never really ended. After nine seasons, the series remained in the hearts of viewers and returned to the small screen over 14 years later with the event seasons of 2016 and 2018.
Now, after about seven years of hiatus, The X-Files is ready for a new, ambitious return. The relaunch will be handled by Ryan Coogler, director of Black Panther and Creed, who has been involved in the development of the project for two years already. Fragmentary updates have arrived during this period, but Coogler has finally confirmed a fundamental element: ithe revival will focus on both horizontal mythology and the famous “monster of the week” episodestwo historical pillars of the original series.
A confirmation that on the one hand excites fans, on the other it raises important questions. The X-Files mythology, in fact, was already extremely complex before the 2016 revival, and seasons 10 and 11 have added further twists that are difficult to ignore, such as the revelations related to William and the CSM. Picking up those narrative threads without creating confusion will be quite a challenge.
Speaking on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Coogler reiterated his deep personal connection to The X-Files, explaining how the series helped him strengthen his relationship with his mother and calling it “one of the best American television series ever made.” He also cited Chris Carter and the influence of Kolchak: The Night Stalker, underlining how The first season of True Detective.
When asked what narrative direction the revival will follow, Coogler was clear: it wouldn’t be The X-Files without both souls of the series. Self-contained monsters and great conspiracy will continue to coexist, even if the director admitted to feeling the full weight of the fans’ expectations, aware of having to deal with an extremely attentive and prepared audience.
Another key element is the absence of Chris Carter, who will not be involved in the new project, and for some fans this could be a positive sign: the most controversial narrative choices of the last seasons could be put aside, leaving room for new creative perspectives capable of renewing the franchise without betraying its spirit. To reinforce this climate of cautious optimism, one of the historical stars of the series recently spoke about the reboot in positive terms, suggesting that a return, in some form, cannot be ruled out at all.
