“It’s a women’s right”

The World Association for Sexual Health, with the document “Sexual Health for the Millennium”, promoted the recognition of sexual health as a key element for health, global well-being and socioeconomic development in the world, declaring that sexual rights are based on universal human rights already recognized in international documents, national constitutions and laws, human rights standards and principles, scientific knowledge relating to human sexuality and sexual health. It was also discussed at Cosmodonna, the experiential fair dedicated to the female universe which concluded on 22 April at the Brixia Forum in Brescia.

“I believe that every day we acquire greater awareness of our own body – said Lucia Golden Pradelli, educator and expert in sexual education – even if in 2024 there is still no naturalness in addressing all the issues related to sexuality, not to push the young people to have sex or to learn more about their body on an anatomical level, but simply to provide the tools to realize their desires also from a sexual point of view, through a conscious approach”.

The pregnancy

A first big change for a woman’s body is certainly pregnancy: “It is always seen as physiological – explains Elisa Rancati, physiotherapist specialized in the rehabilitation of the pelvic floor as well as sexual consultant – and after giving birth, importance is often no longer given to intimate health of women and few take care of the rehabilitation of the pelvic floor”. It is essential to help mothers be prepared for the long “marathon” that leads to the birth of a child, not only from a psychological point of view but also physically (and sexually). In this sense, sex toys are welcome.

“Sex toys – continues Rancati – can help the woman prepare the pelvic floor through, for example, vibration and heat which help to loosen the muscles, especially in the second and third trimester of pregnancy, when it is put under tension and can cause pain in relationships. Let’s remember that a woman has the right to have pleasure and a clitoral sucker could be very useful even when there is a physiological hormonal decline.”

Menopause

Menopause is also another phase full of changes for a woman. “The first thing to do – adds Sabina Pelizzari, also a physiotherapist expert in pelvic floor rehabilitation – is certainly a good gynecological evaluation. Too many women still don’t know what the pelvic floor is: it is important that each one looks at herself and understands the change she is facing. Being followed by a specialized physiotherapist allows you to have an overall vision from a postural, sporting, lifestyle and physiological point of view”. More on sex toys: “Excellent allies for women, not only for pleasure but also as rehabilitation devices. The vibration and heating of the tissues can help to relax stiff muscles but also to regain sensitivity at the clitoral level.”
