At the Tribeca Film festival in New York, Martin Scorsese And Robert De Niro attended a meeting held on the sidelines of the screening of their first collaboration with Mean Streetsfilm dated 1973.

The conversation between Martin Scorsese And Robert De Niromoderated by New York rapper Nas, was held after viewing the film at the Beacon Theater and was a valid opportunity to look back on a friendship and professional partnership spanning over 50 years.

A friendship which, as Scorsese recalls, also occurred thanks to a fellow director: Brian De Palma. In fact, the two, despite having grown up in the same area of the Big Apple, had never met directly, but, they say, they had several friendships in common.

Scorsese says:

Bob was sitting there after dinner (with de Palma), then he looked at me and said “Did you used to hang out with so-and-so?”, and I was like “Yeah, how do you know?”. And he says again “I’m Bobby”. I said “Bobby? Bobby. OMG”. I had seen De Palma after he had done “Hi, Mom!”. After you took part in the film he said to me “You must know this guy”. He (De Niro, ed.) had seen “Who’s That Knocking at My Door” which was a very accurate film about the nature of that subculture in the neighborhood. He identified with that, so when Mean Streets was finally put together, he participated.

Then De Niro adds about the duration of their partnership:

Marty has never been afraid to try something. He always said this: you just do it. If there was something we talked about it, but we also talked about parallels in whatever we were experiencing, our personal experiences that we could then put into the film. “This scene is like this, I remember something happening to me, blah blah blah.” “Well, let’s try this thing, it’s not what actually happened, but it’s the memory of the experience.”

The latest collaboration between Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro is Killers of the Flower Moon.
