Word of the royal expert Tom Quinn, who told the Mirror that the recent tour of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry in Nigeria angered both the sovereign and the first son and heir to the throne William. “What really shocked father and son is the fact that Nigerians treated the Sussexes as if they were on an official trip, as the couple was welcomed with balls, receptions, visits to schools and associations of charity”.
The couple stepped back as senior royals in 2020 and now live in California, and Harry has since been stripped of several royal roles. The expert consulted by the British tabloid suggested that there were concerns within the royal family about the trip to Nigeria, which “confirmed the worst fears: it’s as if Harry and Meghan have rebelled. Their tour was a bold statement that they refuse to accept that they are no longer working as royals. William and Charles are scratching their heads and thinking, ‘How are we going to control this nightmare situation?'”
Reflecting on Meghan and Harry’s journey, Quinn said it was “easy to see why senior royals are worried”. The expert explained that it could be argued that the trip to Nigeria was designed to give the impression that the Sussexes are still working as royals. “There was everything you might expect from an official royal visit: the receptions, the visits to schools and charities, to wounded soldiers and disabled people. Meghan and Harry’s speeches and their whole attitude have been designed to give the impression that they are still reigning royals and William and King Charles don’t like that one bit.. It’s as if Meghan and Harry were saying: ‘We don’t need your permission to work as royals, we will do it on our own terms, whenever and wherever we want’.”
