The evening of awards ceremony of the David di Donatello 2024 it’s over, and it brought with it a trail of controversies. Upon delivery of the statuette for the category of set designers and gods costume designersthe winners were awarded by a staircase, with a single statuette for two people.

It was held yesterday evening – Friday 3 May 2024 – from the Cinecittà studios in Rome, the delivery of the David di Donatello 2024now in its 69th edition.
The event was broadcast by Rai 2, conducted by Carlo Conti and Alessia Marcuzziand during the evening there was no shortage of moments of low television, such as the host’s interview with film critic Vincenzo Mollica.

However, the greatest controversy arose following the awards for the best scenography and best costumeswhich did not take place from the stage, as for the other categories, but from the studio stairs.

And if the award ceremony for the scenography, with the statuette won by Andrea Castorina and Valeria Vecelli for the film “Kidnapped”, the same cannot be said for the delivery of the statuette to the costume department, whose victorious professionals are Sergio Ballo and Daria Calvelli, again for “Kidnapped”.

As soon as he took the statuette, Sergio Ballo turned with the microphone towards his colleague, visibly angry, and began his speech: “We will make a Solomonic judgment of this statuette, we will cut it in two. The cheap girl, there are two of us, you could have even given us two”.
And after having placed the David he had just won right on the stairs, Ballo resumed his speech in no uncertain terms: “because they put us on the stairs like Wanda Osiris, while we would have preferred to share the room with colleagues from this job […] Unfortunately our work, costume designers and set designers, comesI’m quite angry this evening seen as the work of window dressers and maids, which shouldn’t happen.”
The controversies
Sergio Ballo’s speech began in a polemical manner, having thrown his jacket to the floor after getting up from the steps for the awards ceremony, but then ended with a dedication to a friend of the costume designer, Stefania, who “a few days before to die he wanted to give me my grandfather’s tale, which died in Auschwitz on May 30, 1944”.

Ballo then took inspiration, reconnecting to Marco Bellocchio’s film, to talk about “this very sad period for all of us, there is a return of anti-Semitism, because now Europe is becoming Zionist, they are taking the flag without knowing that the Zionism is very complex […] Europe continues to be anti-Semitic, and this is a horrible thing”.
Despite the final message, what stood out most was the initial controversy, to which the host Carlo Conti then responded, explaining the choice: “Having brought certain categories to the places of Cinecittà it seemed like an asset to us to show the general public the work of the people behind the scenes.”
