Automotive, Marsilio: “With unfair competition from Chinese vehicles, we risk losing the European auto industry as we know it”

(REGFLASH) Brussels, 20 June – “I welcome the European Commission’s decision to impose new duties on imports of electric vehicles from China. If we allow Chinese electric vehicles, heavily subsidized by the government, to invade the European market and, at the same time, the Union does not lift the ban on the production of vehicles with combustion engines from 2035, we risk losing the European automotive industry as we know it.” This was declared this morning by the President of the Abruzzo Region and President of the ECR Group, Marco Marsilio, during the first annual meeting of the CoRAI (Committee of the Regions Automotive Intergroup), where he was invited to speak as speaker of the Committee of the Regions on the guidance of the opinion “A just transition for all regions of the European Union” that he is drafting.
Given the results of the European elections, Marsilio said he is “convinced that a growing part of citizens agree with this opinion. The ECR group – he added – the strongest supporter of technological neutrality in the EU, has won new seats in the European Parliament and is now very close to becoming the third largest group. Faced with strong competition from outside Europe,” Marsilio explained before concluding his speech, “the opinion clarifies that it is necessary to protect the automotive sector and its European excellence. We need to make the energy transition more sustainable, free scientific research to identify the best solutions and, at the same time, protect the jobs and industry present in our territory”.
