Yesterday evening, the mayor of Reggio Calabria, Joseph Falcomataheld a live broadcast from the construction site of new little templeillustrating the innovations that will characterize the area and addressing yet another act of vandalism suffered by the city: the removal of the letter “I” from the panoramic writing “Reggio Calabria“.

During the live broadcast, the mayor first showed proof of thelighting system del Tempietto, describing the effect as “very beautiful and natural”. This new lighting will help create a welcoming and safe atmosphere for visitors, making the area even more attractive during the evening hours.

What’s new in social and sports spaces

L’area del Small temple it will be enriched by various new features, aimed at creating a meeting and fun place for all ages. There will be an area games for boys and one for i children smaller ones. To the left of the entrance, two trees, including theTree of Life which will also serve as a gym for sporting activities. Next to this, a natural tree and a totem that will be dedicated to the victims of the Cutro shipwreck, which will be discovered at the time of the inauguration.

Another novelty is represented by a water diffuser, designed to refresh passers-by in the hottest moments of the day. The statue that tells the founding myth of the city, previously located in the same area, will be repositioned, surrounded by new planted trees.

And then basketball courts and play benches. In the next few days, the basketball court will be completed, dedicated to the legendary Kobe Bryant, a way to celebrate the bond of the famous player with the city of the Strait, where as a child he took his first steps in the world of basketball.

The Tempietto area will also be equipped with benches con tables and agitateto allow anyone to enjoy an outdoor game.

The Tempietto walk will be an evocative journey that will culminate in a piazza ready to host concerts, demonstrations and various initiatives. A will also be placed here kiosk. The farthest part of the area will see the repositioning of a modern templetogether with the Reggio columns currently kept at the Archaeological Museum.

The “theft” of the “I” and the indignation of the Reggio community

Mayor Falcomatà then addressed the aact of vandalism which saw the removal of the letter “I” from the panoramic writing “Reggio Calabria”. The act sparked outrage among citizens, a sentiment that the mayor expressed during the live broadcast:

“Someone joked that it looks at Messina, I think it’s a nice thing to read the name of our city in beautiful, panoramic places. I still don’t understand what led to this gesture, but I’m pleased with the indignation born from the act of vandalism against the city of those who broke the I”.

The letter was promptly restored thanks to the rapid intervention of the company responsible for the work.

“Sometimes we ourselves cause the city’s evil,” he said. Falconryurging citizens to stop damaging common goods.

“I don’t know what the person who removed the I had in mind – he continued – perhaps they wanted to read Reggo Calabria, in the sense that our city supports the entire region, but objectively there are no other explanations, we must stop hurting ourselves , I say this without wanting to give weight to the matter, even if it has some and certainly we, as an administration, do not underestimate it, so much so that we have filed a complaint as happened for all acts of vandalism that occurred against common goods.

So let’s not be wrong, there is no other definition. Reggio is a city with many problems, but which is slowly reclaiming its spaces: the small temple, the southern linear park, the Catona seafront, the municipal lido. There is a lot of work to be done, no one doubts it, but inch by inch the city is reclaiming things that were taken from it, when the city regains social spaces we must not be the ones to take them away.

Whoever attacks the name of the city – he added – attacks the identity, we must recover a sense of honor and belonging, starting from the name that no one should allow to deface. We are the guardians of our origins, of the beauty and good name of Reggio. Our city is beautiful and kind and we must be too”.

The mayor concluded the live broadcast with an appeal to the community to take care of the city and its spaces, underlining the importance of a sense of belonging and honor. He thanked the thousands of citizens who showed up indignation in the face of this gesture, hoping that similar acts will never be repeated.

“Let’s work together to recover and enhance our spaces,” urged the mayor, inviting everyone to imagine a future in which families, children and people of all ages can enjoy the beauty and opportunities offered by the city.

By installing new surveillance cameras, the municipal administration aims to prevent further acts of vandalism, ensuring the safety and well-being of all citizens.
