Consumption, the spending of Turin families increases: the data

With a monthly average of 2597 euros in 2023, the highest value of the last 10 years was reached: food spending starts to grow again, especially for desserts, fruit and fish, and after the pandemic period they are in drop in takeaway and take away. Housing absorbs more than half of non-food expenditure, even if after the energy crisis bills stabilize again. Among luxury expenses, the following is confirmed growth in holidays and meals away from home.

This is the snapshot of the spending of Turin families that emerges from the Chamber of Commerce survey, a research that monitors the consumption and purchasing habits of 240 households residing in Turin. Faced with the restart of expenses, however, there is a downside that the President of the Chamber, Dario Gallina, highlights: «The small percentage of families who manage to save part of their income is worrying, going from 25% in 2019 to 16.7% in 20203″.

The average monthly expenditure of 2597 euros is growing by 1.7% (+43 euros) compared to 2022. If last year for the first time the food expenses recorded a reduction, in 2023 there was a clear recovery reaching 419 euros (+2.7% on 2022), i.e. 16% of the total. The people of Turin are more willing to buy sweets, fruit and fish, while purchases of alcohol are decreasing. After the boom of the Covid period, spending on take away or home delivery food slows down.

The growth of non-food expenditure continues, which in 2023 amount to 2178 euros (84% of total expenses). The main item remains housing, which represents 48.5% of non-food expenses, in line with 2022. One figure concerns expenses for gas, electricity, water and heating bills, equal to an average of 232 euros per month, which after the boom of two years ago they are stabilized.

Turin families don’t give up on holidays and indulge themselves more and more leisure travel. In this case we go back to exceeding 100 euros on average per month, with an increase of 7 euros compared to 2022. Meals outside the home are also growing, reaching 86 euros and recording the absolute highest amount in the last ten years.

If expenses increase, on the contrary savers decrease. In 2023, the number of families who declared that they had managed to put something aside during the year fell further: only 16.7%, the lowest figure in the last five years and far from the values of 2019, when stood at 25%. Overall, for almost 72% of families the average income remained stable compared to a year earlier.
