Work on the construction of the new library in Cesano Maderno will start within a few days.
It will be a building built from scratch, modern and functional, with an estimated cost of around 4 million euros achieved thanks to a form of public-private partnership.
It will be built within the area of the former Pietro Secondi trancia, between via Solferino, Goito and San Martino, an area which has long been abandoned near the new railway station which overlooks the old one.
The new library, which will not only be much larger than the current one in via Borromeo, but also in line with the cultural, social and technological transformations of the city. It will be a modern, equipped and inclusive space: a place to carry out activities, workshops, initiatives, courses and events. Books and reading will be accompanied by new opportunities to develop skills and abilities, but also to foster relationships between people and strengthen social cohesion. The new library is part of a broader urban redevelopment and refunctionalization project of the area in which new residences and services will be built, in addition to the cycle/pedestrian overpass that will bypass the railway, giving rise to a significant renewal of the neighborhood. There are two floors above ground and a basement for service rooms. The new library will cover a total surface area of approximately 1,416 square metres, almost four times the surface area of the current headquarters. The facades will be composed of large floor-to-ceiling windows which will alternate with parts made of vertical polychrome metal slats.
The main entrance will be on the north side of the building. On the roof there is an impressive photovoltaic system which will make the new structure a building with zero or almost zero energy consumption. The library is designed to accommodate approximately 42,000 volumes. 180 seats and 90 seats are planned for the multipurpose room. The design of the spaces responds to accessibility, adaptability and visitability criteria. The project for the creation of tactile-vocal paths for people with visual disabilities using a system of tactile indicators on the ground integrated with electronic technology for voice messages was created on the basis of the Inmaci Guidelines for the autonomous mobility of the blind and visually impaired.
“The new municipal library will first and foremost be a quality meeting space, the envelope of activities designed to promote opportunities for meeting, training and growth for the entire community” underlined the mayor Gianpiero Bocca. “With the start of this construction site we are giving substance to a request that the many users of our current library have been raising for some time, especially many students who over the years have preferred libraries close to us, more suited to their needs” adds the councilor for Public Works, Manuel Tarraso. According to the timetable, the new Cesano Maderno library should be completed by December 2025.
