The cast

The progenitor of the film saga is Dawnreleased in 2023. All the films that make up this series are American produced, just as the author of the novels from which the films are based is also American.

The director is Lynda-Lisa Hayter, who directs a cast composed mainly of Brec Bassinger, Donna Mills, Jesse Metcalfe and Khobe Clarke.

Joining Bassinger are Jesse Metcalf and Khobe Clarke, who play his “father” and “brother” respectively. Joey McIntyre and Fran Drescher are also part of the cast. Donna Mills gives a delightfully wicked performance as Dawn’s grandmother, Lillian Cutler.

Jesse Metcalfe plays Ormand Longchamp, Dawn’s adoptive father, and Khobe Clarke as her adoptive brother. Jason Cermak as Dawn’s biological father, Randolph Cutler; Miranda Frigon as Dawn’s mother, Laura Jean Cutler; and Elyse Maloway (Super Monsters, The Magicians) and Dane Schioler (Prom Pact) are Dawn’s siblings, Clara Jean and Philip Cutler.

Brec Bassinger is the star of Stargirlwho here plays the lead role in the new Lifetime miniseries.

“It was a very circular moment,” Bassinger said of his role on the show. “The first time I went to Los Angeles, in 2013, I was 13. I auditioned for the film Flowers in the attic, the 2014 version. I got pretty far ahead and met the directors. When I auditioned for this, I was very familiar with VC Andrews’ work.” When he mentions Flowers in the Attic, he is referring to the 1987 film directed by Jeffrey Bloom and based on the novel Sunless flowers by VC Andrews, even though she participated in the auditions for the new version, the 2014 version.

The Fabulous Four, trailer of the film with Bette Midler and Susan Sarandon

Sort of like a four-part miniseries

These four films almost feel like four episodes of a miniseries. Each chapter follows the macro-story of Dawn Longchamp (Bassinger), who discovers a shocking truth about the people who raised her. She will be catapulted into a new family whose dark secrets throw her life into turmoil and crisis.

VC Andrews’ books are among the best-selling in history. Starting in 1979 with Flowers in the attic, Andrews’ collection of novels has sold more than 106 million copies and has been translated into 22 foreign languages. Andrews died in 1986 and Andrew Neiderman took the creative reins after her, ensuring her success continued.

The cult following of VC Andrews’ novels has generated a lot of interest: the stories have been adapted into more than 19 films so far. This year, to coincide with what would have been Andrews’ 100th birthday, a new paperback edition of Flowers in the attic. Recently, Lifetime acquired the rights to the works and now the saga of Dawn.

Dawn Cutler’s novels have fascinated readers for decades. The first novel in the series, Dawn, follows the story of Dawn Longchamp as she struggles to adjust to her new family, all the while battling her evil grandmother Lillian. In the meantime, many other family mysteries will emerge, all pieces of a new puzzle that will shock the protagonist.

“I was able to watch the first two episodes with my family and within the first 10 minutes of Dawn finding out… about her biological parents, my dad said, ‘They’re not kidding. They go right into the madness,'” the actress said hero.

“For me, one of my favorite parts of this job was going through three decades of Dawn’s life,” Bassinger told the panel. “So the story arc that I went through was very challenging, but very rewarding.”

The story develops chronologically

Since the story develops chronologically, the production of the films was shot in two blocks, which Bassinger appreciated. “We understood our characters better and matured them,” explained the actress. “By having time with the material, we were able to do that with our acting as well. I draw a lot from my life experience. I have not been a parent, I do not have a child, I have never been married. So, I had to approach this role differently.”
