The literary production of Stephen King is really extensive, and it is difficult to think that such an author could have had “writer’s block”, but one of his old novels could let us understand the “King’s” secret technique for keeping his production of writings constant over time.
In the novel “Pile of bones” from 1988, the protagonist is a novelist (not a novelty for King’s stories) in full “writer’s block” due to the death of his wife. Just to hide the problem from his publisher, our protagonist Mike he exhumes some of his old writings, revealing to the reader that the optimal pace of publishing is that of publish a book a year (“If you publish too often, the writer becomes overexposed. By publishing too infrequently, readers tend to forget about the writer.”). Mike manages to hide his problem thanks to the fact that he wrote a lot before his wife’s death, gradually handing over his writings to the publisher. Stephen King’s Bunch of Bones has also been adapted into a film.
Stephen King has repeatedly admitted that he also takes inspiration from his own life experiences when writing his novels, and this leads us to think that the king applies the same technique as his character Mike. In fact, let’s remember that the master of horror has suffered a serious accident in 1999, when he was hit by a minivan, and it is no coincidence that around the time of the accident a good part of his “Series B Production” was recorded, including collaborations and books published under a pseudonym. It is therefore very likely that Stephen King will also pull out old manuscripts to send to your publishers during his less creative periods.
