This new book by Renato Pennisi – so new, so unsettling – is nothing other than a poetic reconnaissance of a void: a void of memory and future, saturated with disillusionment and dust (the key word in Pennisi). In the broken and at times prosaic arrangement of a free verse, the convocation of some charismatic figures (Pasolini coming down from the Alfetta, Sciascia smoking his Chesterfields…) along a journey inside the ruins of an inconclusive Europe, inside the rituals of a shocked world, within the prophecies of a cosmic desperation, to which only poetry can – perhaps uselessly – oppose the search for some shred of “light”.
