In Mantua, Friday 19 Aprilat 4pmat the house of the Renaissance painter Andrea Mantegna, the General Secretary of the Dante Alighieri Society Alessandro Masi will present his essay Cursed Life by Benvenuto Cellini (Neri Pozza, 2023).
The President of the Province of Mantua will introduce the meeting Carlo Bottani. He will dialogue with the author Stefano Bruno Galli, Professor of History of Doctrines and Political Institutions at the University of Milan and Advisor to the Minister of Culture. They will intervene Claudio Fraccarimember of the Mantua Committee of the Dante Alighieri Society e Luca GhirardiniDeputy Editor-in-Chief of the Gazzetta di Mantova.
THE BOOK
Sculptor, goldsmith, musician and writer, author of one of the most famous and compelling autobiographies in the history of art, Benvenuto Cellini represents the most controversial and suffered face of the entire Renaissance. Perhaps even more than that of Caravaggio, his existence was marked by violence, crime and provocation, full of twists and turns, adventures and legendary trials. The protagonist of this story is capable of great feats and heroic acts, such as the courageous defense of Rome from the walls of Castel Sant’Angelo during the Sack of 1527, but also of memorable clashes with the Popes Clement VII and Paul III, who although not sparing recognition for his artistic genius, they caused him suffering and disappointment. Imprisoned in the dungeons of the Mole Adriana and freed thanks to the intervention of the King of France, Benvenuto Cellini experienced honors and glory with the creation of masterpieces such as the Salt Cellar of Francis I, today in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, or, subsequently, with the extraordinary feat of the bronze casting of the Perseus, made in Florence for Duke Cosimo I. Alessandro Masi, through the words of the Florentine goldsmith, retraces the incredible deeds of an unscrupulous man, murderer and thief when necessary, declared homosexual and for this reason tried, convicted and imprisoned several times: a cursed, unsuspecting and at the same time very modern life.
