The winners of the 2024 Italian Architecture Award

The three winners of the fifth edition of the Italian Architecture Award have been revealed, the annual initiative promoted by MAXXI and Triennale Milano to promote Italian architecture. In the competition – which is aimed at Italian architects or studios (or those active in the national territory), whose projects stand out for their innovation and social relevance – the architects Pietro Martino and Federico Pizzi, Pierluigi Nicolin and the Grazzini Tonazzini group triumphed Colombo.THE BEST ITALIAN BUILDING IS A CELLAR IN LOMBARDYFor the project of the Ceresè winery, the architects Pietro Martino and Federico Pizzi, of Studio Pizzi in Milan, were awarded the award for the best building built in the last three years. Built in Montevecchia, in the province of Lecco, the structure is characterized by a double-curved pink reinforced concrete roof, supported by slender steel columns. Finally, large windows allow natural light to enter and dialogue with the evocative surrounding landscape. THE LIFETIME LIFETIME AWARD TO PIERLUIGI NICOLINA Pierluigi Nicolin – architect and critic of international standing, as well as director of the historic architecture magazine Lotus International – the The jury unanimously awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award. A recognition that highlights “the incessant work of criticism, university teaching, research and editorial care on Italian and international architecture that Nicolin has carried out for over fifty years”, declared Stefano Boeri, President of Triennale Milano. For the occasion, MAXXI announced the acquisition of the archive of the magazine, of which Triennale Milano will become publisher in 2026. THE UNDER 35 AWARD TO THE Grazzini TONAZZINI COLOMBO GROUP The Grazzini Tonazzini Colombo group received the under 35 Award for the installation Quintessere, inaugurated in the outdoor spaces of the MAXXI on the occasion of the Italian Architecture Award ceremony. Conceived to host the museum’s summer events, this temporary structure combines the theater’s stage backdrop with the concept of the Aristotelian “celestial sphere” (the “fifth element”, ethereal, pure and incorruptible). It is made up of a sequence of vertical planes in galvanized sheet metal; inside, an intimate courtyard has been created for relaxation and rest, enriched by a water basin with jet fountains.THE HONORABLE MENTIONS AND THE EXHIBITION AT THE MAXXI Finally, three architectural studios were awarded the honorable mention: BALANCE ARCHITECTURE with the Bicocca Superlab project (Milan, 2022); Carlana Mezzalira Pentimalli with the Bressanone Civic Library (2022); Luciano Pia with The Heat Garden (Turin, 2022). Until September 29, the winning and finalist projects will be on display at the MAXXI Architettura Archive Center.
