First phase delivery by August 29, 2024

A new museum, dedicated to architecture and design, especially Finnish, in the “South Harbour”, a new pedestrian-friendly neighbourhood. A museum building, unique worldwide, which positions Helsinki among the most important destinations for architecture, design and art.

The international competition for the design of the new museum of architecture and design in the Finnish capitalpromoted by the Real Estate ADM company – a company owned by the city of Helsinki and the Finnish government – together with the Foundation for the Finnish Museum of Architecture and Design, in collaboration with the Finnish Association of Architects SAFA and the city of Helsinki.

We are looking for an open, welcoming, inclusive space that invites reflection, attractive to the most varied types of visitors. It will celebrate the heritage and innovative spirit of Finnish and Nordic design and architecture, but not only: the museum aims to become a point of reference for the debate on the great contemporary issues that society is facing and to which architecture and design are called upon to respond.

Competition in two levels

The competition takes place in two levels and is anonymous. Multidisciplinary teams led by architects can participate. The first phase, which closes on August 29, requires the development of a concept. The best proposals (three to five) have access to the second phase which takes place between February and May 2025.

The designers are part of the participatory process

Participation, co-creation and dialogue are basic ingredients of the procedure: the brief was developed by involving stakeholders and user groups. Furthermore, the selected works will be evaluated with the help of experts in the museum, education, urban culture and accessibility sectors and will receive indications from the jury.

During the second phase, a dialogue will be opened with the jury and with experts in different fields of museum design: the selected participants will have to explain how they intend to implement the indications received.

Once the winner is selected, a more in-depth participation process will begin to co-create the building’s key spaces in collaboration with its future users. Therefore, the museum design will be further developed together with the users and the client during the development phase.
