JR at Milan Central Station

Just over a year after the last intervention in Italy (still in Milan between the Arengario in Piazza Duomo and the headquarters of the RSA “Spouses and Ferrari” at Corvetto) with the work Now it’s your turn – which is part of the broader one Inside Outone of the largest and most internationally known participatory art projects – the street artist JR (1983) returns to the Lombardy capital, to Milan Central Station, where he presents the work The birth from 10 April to 1 May 2024, in Piazza Duca d’Aosta. Visible by adopting a not too close point of view, the new monumental installation is the first sculptural anamorphosis created by the French artist, conceived as a large trompe-l’œil (technique often used by JR, as at the Opéra Garnier in Paris with Return to the Caverne) to tell the origin and history of the station: through metal panels arranged on 4 levels, the image of The birth it takes shape only if observed from an inclined position with respect to its plane, in an intervention that merges and confuses the work with the building designed by the architect Ulisse Stacchini and inaugurated in July 1931.

JR’s interventions in Italy

The internationally renowned artist, represented by Perrotin, PACE Gallery, Galleria Continua and Nara Roesler, has already intervened with his monumental installations in Italy, from the facade of Palazzo Strozzi to Florence to that of Palazzo Farnese a Rome with The woundin addition to the first solo exhibition JR. DéplacéAnds at the Gallerie d’Italia in Turin (February – July 2023), where for the occasion he also held a performance with hundreds of people in Piazza San Carlo, presenting five canvases depicting the images of the children met during visits to refugee camps, from Rwanda to Greece.
