A 13-year-old boy was killed by an officer after fleeing a traffic stop on foot. The incident occurred on the evening of Friday, June 28, in Utica, New York, and the boy, identified as Nyah Mway, died at the hospital. The story was picked up by US media after the release of bodycam footage of the three officers who intervened. As reported by the Associated Press, Nyah’s family came to the United States about a decade ago as refugees from Myanmar.

What happened

Officers had arrested two teenagers as part of a series of recent thefts in the area. The suspects were described as armed Asian males. According to police reports, Nyah began to run away pointing a gun that officers thought was real. In reality this later turned out to be a pellet gun, more precisely a replica of a Glock 17 pistol with a detachable magazine. At that point, the officer, after reaching him, threw him to the ground. A scuffle ensued during which the officer fired a shot, but rescue was of no avail.
