Oleksandr Syrskyi, the commander of the Ukrainian army, said on Sunday that his troops had moved west of the towns of Berdychi, Novomykhailivka and Semenivka, in the east of the country, where Russia is concentrating many of its forces: «The situation at the front it’s getting worse,” Syrskyi wrote on social media.

Russia has also massed four brigades, i.e. groups of several thousand soldiers, near Kurakhove and Pokrovsk, west of Adviivka, the town captured by Russia last February. Syrskyi wrote that for now Russia has managed to gain “tactical” advantages in this area, but not “operational” ones, and that the situation is changing very rapidly.

Ukraine is waiting to receive new weapons and ammunition from the United States after the Senate last week gave final approval to a bill that, among other things, guarantees nearly $61 billion in military aid for Ukraine. The US Congress has not approved aid to Ukraine since January 2023, and President Volodymyr Zelensky has been pushing for it for some time, also due to the growing difficulties of the army and the stalemate in the fighting.

It is not clear when Ukraine will begin to receive aid: on April 24 the Pentagon, the US Department of Defense, said that within a few days it would send a billion dollars in weapons and ammunition to Ukraine, but they have not precise details regarding the timing have been released. Zelensky said on Sunday evening that the country was “still waiting for the promised aid.”
