The group leader at the National Assembly of the left-wing movement France Insoumise (LFI) , Mathilde Panotannounced that she had been summoned by the police within the framework of ainvestigation for “apologia of terrorism”. The investigation was opened following the publication by the French left party of a statement following the Hamas attack on Israel, last October 7th. In that statement, the party led by Jean-Luc Mélenchon drew a parallel between the Hamas attack, described as an “armed offensive by Palestinian forces” and “the intensification of Israeli occupation policy” in the Palestinian Territories. “It is the first time in the history of the Fifth Republic that the leader of an opposition party in the National Assembly has been summoned for such a serious reason,” he declared Panot. In recent weeks, Mélenchon has placed the conflict between Israel and Hamas at the center of his campaign for the European elections June 9th.

Last April 19, the general secretary of the French trade union CGT du Nord Jean-Paul Delescaut he was sentenced to one year in prison and compensation of 5 thousand euros for having written on a flyer that “The horrors of the illegal occupation have accumulated. Saturday (October 7, ed) the responsibles they received the answers to what they caused.” According to the judges of the Lille Court, the statement constitutes the crime of “apology for terrorism” believing that the limits of freedom of expression have been exceeded. The statement was removed from the site after three days and replaced with another more “institutional”.
