5 predictions from Homer and co. which did not come true

The Simpsons, in over thirty years of television career, have established themselves not only as one of the greatest animated shows of all time, but of the entire comedy scene. And, among the numerous peculiarities that have distinguished them over the decades, there is one that more than all makes them unique: their incredible predictions.

From Coronavirus to sporting successes, Ebola, the Barbie craze… there are many episodes that have demonstrated just how much the Simpsons have are capable of predicting the future. Of course, these are pure and simple coincidences, seasoned with a refined knowledge of the world and of American popular culture. In fact, there are just as many occasions in which the most ramshackle family in America has spectacularly missed the mark: here are five predictions that have not come true… at least for now!

Hologram-based technology

The thirty-fifth season episode “It’s a Blunderful Life” features some flash forward in which humans are capable of transferring their consciousness into a holographic projection. Although some scientists and technology companies have experimented with holographic imaging, a hologram that can talk and think like a human has not yet been developed.

A giant dome encloses the cities

Main theme of the Simpsons movie, released several years ago now, in which their town – Springfield – is enclosed in a giant ultra-technological dome. A solution to the climate problem, or a protection from possible missile attacks? Who knows if one day we will really see our cities protected by this bizarre and ingenious technology.

Time travel is accessible

Obviously it is not an invention of the Simpsons, on the contrary, it is a device that we often find in the plots of science fiction films such as Back to the Future, Terminator, Edge of Tomorrow and many others. The Simpsons, as always, However, they wanted to give a more pleasant touch to the chaos which would result from time travel during the episode “Future-Drama”. By playing with multiple timelines, The Simpsons anticipated what would happen a few years later in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with the Multiverse saga.

Permanent settlements in Antarctica

The Simpsons predicted that humans would build permanent settlements in Antarctica, as large as “normal” cities. Although there are several research stations in Antarctica today, no cities or anything close to them have ever been developed. The episode protagonist of this prediction, entitled “An absolutely funny thing that Bart will never do again”, is a very clear reference to “The Thing” by John Carpenter, set in Antarctica.

Food in virtual reality

Although virtual reality is slowly and laboriously making its way into our everyday lives, the Simpsons predicted that the technology will be able to satiate us through its “VR food”. Here too, the food problem that has afflicted poor Homer since 1988 is being ironized. Who knows if one day Apple Vision will be able to make us eat through its AR/VR, assuming we have some change left to buy groceries!
