Baby Reindeer was one of the biggest hits of the year for Netflix. But its creator, executive producer and actor, Richard Gadd, is about to move to the competition. In fact, Gadd has announced that he will create a series of 6 episodes entitled Lions for HBO, in co-production with BBC.
Says Kara Buckley, senior vice president of drama programming at HBO:
We are incredibly excited to be partnering with the BBC and Richard Gadd, whose extraordinary talent continues to make waves around the world. With this compelling and evocative new series, we are proud to welcome Richard to the HBO family.
The official synopsis for the series reads: “When Niall’s estranged ‘brother’ Ruben shows up at his wedding, it leads to an explosion of violence that catapults us back into their lives. Spanning nearly four decades, from the 1980s to the present day, this ambitious series will chronicle the ups and downs of the brothers’ relationship, from their meeting as teenagers to their falling out as adults — with all the good, bad, terrible, funny, angry and challenging moments along the way. It will capture the raw energy of a changing city — a changing world, even — and seek to get to the heart of the difficult question… What does it mean to be a man?
The author of Baby Reindeer will be the creator, writer and executive producer of the new series, while Alexandra Brodski Eshref Reybrouck will direct. There is no word yet on the cast.
