Eric Kripke, showrunner of The Boyscommented on what Patriot did in episode 4 of season 4.

Talking with TV Insider,, Kripke analyzed the motivations that led Homelander to return to Vought Labs in episode 4×04 of The Boys:

His goal was to finally address his feelings of vulnerability and humanity and his need for approval and love because he feels it all originated from his time spent there. So she wanted to confront him and kill him. And was it successful? I think he thinks he was successful. Homelander’s problem is that no matter how hard he tries to kill the human part of him and become a god, he will never be able to do so because he is human and no matter how disgusted he is by it or represses it, he has human emotions. And I think what’s slowly driving him crazy is that he hates humanity and yet he’s human.

And I don’t need the audience to be sympathetic to Patriot, I want to go on record with a spicy take that I don’t condone or approve of any of his behavior. But I want them to understand it a little more and understand why it is the way it is. I don’t like or know how to write villains who are just evil for the sake of being evil. They’re evil because they have a strong disconnect between their internal life, where they think they’re a hero, and their external life, where they definitely aren’t. And so I’m interested in that space and what makes someone so self-deluded.

The Boys is available on Prime Video.

In season four, the world is on the brink. Victoria Neuman is closer than ever to the Oval Office and under the control of Homelander, who is consolidating his power over her. Billy Butcher, who has only months to live, has lost both Becca’s son and his role as leader of The Boys. The rest of the team is tired of his lies. The stakes will be higher than usual and they will have to find a way to work together and save the world, before it’s too late.

The cast of The Boys stars Karl Urban, Jack Quaid, Antony Starr, Erin Moriarty, Jessie T. Usher, Laz Alonso, Chace Crawford, Tomer Capone, Karen Fukuhara, Colby Minifie, Claudia Doumit and Cameron Crovetti. The fourth season will also welcome Susan Heyward, Valorie Curry and Jeffrey Dean Morgan.
