The Boys season four really holds no holds barred

The Boys fails to integrate interesting new characters, but it remains a decidedly choral show. It suffers from dispersion into a myriad of subplots that can be exciting or totally devoid of appeal, depending on the character. Impossible to capitalize on them all, due to the overabundance of characters. Frenchie and Kimiko’s narrative lines are still intriguing because the suffering caused by their personal demons (who doesn’t?) continue to make us feel involved, and make us want a resolution for them, but… who could care about attacks of MM’s leadership panic or Hughie’s chronic insecurities? Thanks to Billy, the new character played by is introduced Jeffrey Dean Morgan (no, at least in the first six episodes of the season our dream of seeing Jensen Ackles in the role of Soldier interact with his colleague Supernatural does not come true), as Joe, an old acquaintance of Butcher’s.

Jasper Savage

His mission is play devil’s advocate and drag Butcher towards his darker side but, considering the enormous expectations for the actor’s participation as a season guest, his role (all too similar in circumstances to that of Denny Duquette in the fifth season of Grey’s Anatomy), is subdued and a bit disappointing. The most solid and valid narrative arc, in terms of personal journey, is that of Patriot, which thanks to the script and Antony Starr’s enlightened performance stands out as the most powerful and best developed of the show. Through some flashback offers a superb psychological analysis of a villain who has good reason to have become a sociopath, while through the relationship with his son he explores, with a naturalistic approach, the influences of “race, milieu, moment” on individual development. Both he andThe Boys they still have a lot to offer.
