The Bold and the Beautiful is one of the longest-running American soap operas in TV history. It has been broadcast for over 37 years and is watched in one hundred countries around the world with 300 million viewers worldwide.
In Italy it is much loved, it airs every day at 1.45pm and has been broadcast since 1990. Initially the rights to The Bold and the Beautiful were purchased by Rai, then from 1994 the soap belongs to Mediaset, which after passing it on for a short period on Rete 4, moved it to Canale 5.
One of the actors who has been part of the cast of The Bold and the Beautiful since its inception is Eric Forrester, founder of the most important fashion house in the world. His character is played by John McCook, who in an interview with Corriere della Sera let himself go and told a very intimate secret that concerns his family.

In the interview, John McCook revealed for the first time publicly that his 43-year-old son Jake suffers from schizophrenia. The diagnosis came late and the actor decided to talk about it now because according to him, “it is important to lift the veil and keep an open discussion on certain topics. Also to make other people who are experiencing all this feel less alone.”
Jake has published a book called The cliffs of schizophrenia: a mother and son perspective, in which he tells the whole story of his illness. The mother also collaborated in the work – whose title in Italian is The Cliffs of Schizophrenia: the perspective of a mother and a son.
“Some time had to pass before we could understand what it was about.” admits John McCook. “Sometimes a father doesn’t immediately understand how things are.” It’s still: “At first with my son I had a primitive reaction.”
The actor hopes that the theme of mental health will also arrive in the story of The Bold and the Beautiful, also because social issues are often addressed.
“It would be a great challenge – hopes the actor who plays Eric Forester – Representing the difficulties of those with mental problems in a correct way in the cinema or on TV would be useful.” The actor also adds to Corsera that in his opinion, those who deal with the topic today always do so through clichés.
