Storm on Rai, after the Scurati case 15 thousand signatures collected to “stop paying the license fee”
Descriptive text here

The air of disapproval for Rai after the Scurati censorship case mounts as the hours pass. The thermometer of this dissent, especially after the Scurati case, are the signatures collected on Change.org against the company: the one for the temporary stop to the license fee exceeded 15 thousand signatures.

The Scurati case and the alleged censorship of his intervention in Serena Bortone’s program continues to hold sway and generate effects that seem to go well beyond the political and management issues of the company, affecting Rai’s reputation among the public. In recent hours, the resentment of part of the population for the management of the public service company has produced a series of signature collections in open protest against the current management, in relation to the background issues that have emerged in recent days.

The petition against the fee

In the last few hours they have been collected further 15 thousand signatures for the online petition launched by some citizens to ask for it stop paying the Rai license fee. The petition asks RAI politics and management to “review editorial policies to guarantee more balanced and impartial information”.

In the text we read that many viewers believe that his information policy is biased and oriented towards a certain type of politics. This perception is problematic as it limits the public’s freedom of choice. In a democratic society, every individual should have the freedom to watch what he wants without having to pay for a service he doesn’t identify with or appreciate.”explain the authors of the petition.

Scurati case, Bianca Berlinguer: “I’ve seen contracts torn up in Rai, it’s right to pay for services”

Several signatures were collected against Rai

The signature collection launched by Alessandro Spinozzi is moving in the same direction, having collected 40 thousand signatures from 14 April to date to abolish the Rai license fee: “Why pay for a service that no longer guarantees free expression and is full of advertising like other networks?”he writes.

The Scurati case evidently represents the culmination of a resentment that had already built up in recent weeks. In recent days, following the approval of the amendment on equal conditions in Rai, another petition for freedom of information, launched by Alberto Giraudo, had gathered 18 thousand signatures. “I am deeply concerned about democracy and freedom of the press in our country.”, writes the promoter of the appeal. Then remembering that “May 3rd is World Press Freedom Day. It is the perfect time for us Italian citizens to demonstrate our support for journalists and their important mission. We ask everyone to take to the Italian streets that day to protest against these oppressive actions.”

And again in November 2023, another signature collection with around 30 thousand subscriptions asked to offer the possibility of not paying the fee to those who do not use the service: “I am an Italian citizen who, like many others, has stopped watching Rai”his appeal read. “After the departure of Fazio, Saviano, Annunziata, Mannoni and Augias from Rai, I find myself no longer using this service. However, I am still obligated to pay the fee. I find it an abuse of power and an obligation that limits my freedom of choice. I pay if I receive a quality service”he explained.

The precedent with the case of Barbara d’Urso

If it is true that the Change.org petitions do not represent an exact photograph of the population, they are a thermometer that measures some feelings and requests that are circulating. In the past, the petition site has often given space to issues related to the world of television – remember the sensational case of the request for cancellation of Barbara d’Urso’s programs – which had acted as a sounding board for very lively controversies in the daily debate .
