The revolt of Rai journalists: «Stop this drift. Rai does not belong to governments”

First the amendments on equal conditions, then the sudden cancellation of the speech by the Strega prize winner Antonio Scurati, in the middle the episode of Door to door on abortion with seven men and no women in the studio and the partial cancellation of the highly popular summer reruns of Reports the contents of which will be “agreed with the company”, all seasoned with illustrious farewells, the last of which is that of Amadeus. What’s happening in Rai? Many people are wondering this, including the Editorial Committee of the Insights Department of the national broadcaster, which comments with “dismay” on the news, which has spread across newspapers and social networks and has contributed to the terrible reputation that Rai seems to be doing everything it can to win over its audience.

The Ghali case

«Rai itself – continues the union representation of Rai journalists – which a few months ago ended up in the eye of the storm for the unsustainable reprimand of a singer, guilty of having asked live for peace in the Middle East». And again: «As journalists of the Insights department, engaged daily in the creation of historical programs, which are the face of Rai’s information (Agorà, Report, Presa Diretta, Porta a Porta, Chi l’ha visto, Petrolio, Mi manda Rai 3), we express our concern about this drift. We wonder who instigated these slip-ups (politics? The government? The board of directors?). And especially what is the point of this Tafazzian impetus, which is undermining our authority among the public.”

Rai is not a land of conquest

The journalists then come to a direct question: «Does anyone really believe that all this can shift consensus for the next elections? Does anyone really think that Rai is a tool for electoral campaigns or for insignificant political positioning? Once again we shout: Rai does not belong to the governments (this or the previous ones makes little difference), nor to the parties (majority or opposition, it is the same), nor to the current (or past) company management. Rai belongs to the viewers and its workers. It is not a land of conquest, it is a plural space, a Babel, which gives voice to Italian society in its complexities and contradictions.” The statement signed by Filippo Barone and Manuele Bonaccorsi then concludes: «We will ask the director Paolo Corsini – a long-time Rai journalist whom we respect professionally – for a discussion on these issues, so that he can act as guarantor and responsible to the editorial staff and to the publisher of the correctness and independence of our work.”
