Coronation of King Charles III, who are the Italians invited and present at the ceremony

The patrol of compatriots present at the Westminster rite next Saturday and at all the related events this weekend will be small but significant: the tenor Andrea Bocelli was present; Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi, husband of Princess Beatrice of York; the conductor Antonio Pappano and also the jazz band “Smile Orchestra” of Monterotondo. The Italian institutions will be represented by the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella

It will be a small but significant presence of the Italians at the coronation ceremony of King Charles III, scheduled in London on Saturday 6 May. The reference is not only to those who may be watching on the street, such as the thirty-seven-year-old Tuscan Gilda Faleri, royal watcher by passion, who has already announced her presence along the route of the royal carriage, but to those who instead will witness the actual ritual , which will take place in Westminster Abbey, or at the concert to be held on Sunday 7 May.

Edoardo Alessandro Mapelli Mozzi

The first to be there, for obvious family reasons, is Edoardo Alessandro Mapelli Mozzi, who is related to the British Crown having married Beatrice of York, daughter of Sarah Ferguson and Prince Andrew, brother of Charles. Born in 1983, billionaire and well-known property developer in the City, Mapelli Mozzi was born in the United Kingdom but boasts Italian origins on his father’s side, especially from Bergamo, given that his family is the one that owned the seventeenth-century building in Locate Ponte San Pietro. After the marriage in 2020, the two also had a daughter, Sienna Elizabeth Mapelli Mozzi, born in September 2021. For Edoardo, she is not the first heir: in fact, he already has a five-year-old child, Christopher, from a previous relationship with the Sino-American architect Dana Huang.

Andrea Bocelli

He will be the only Italian superstar, among many foreign artists and musicians: Andrea Bocelli will be the only Italian artist to participate, on Sunday 7 May, in the concert for the coronation of King Charles III in the park of Windsor Castle, where he will sing for 20 thousand people, including the public and invited guests, and millions of spectators connected from all continents. In addition to Bocelli there will be, among others, Take That (but not in full), Lionel Richie and Katy Perry. “I have had the great honor of singing for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on several occasions. It is now another great honor to be invited to perform at the Coronation Concert of King Charles III. My joy and enthusiasm multiplied when I learned of the possibility of duetting with my dear friend and superb baritone, Sir Bryn Terfel, performing an iconic song of collective solidarity,” said Bocelli.

Anthony Pappano

The Royal Opera House in London, who will accompany the most important moments of this ceremony, will be directed by an Anglo-Italian like the conductor Antonio Pappano. Born to Italian parents who left Castelfranco in Miscano in 1958 to seek their fortune, Pappano has been musical director of the London institution since 2002. His worldwide fame has been recognized in both countries: in fact, Pappano was awarded the title of Cavaliere for the services rendered to music by Queen Elizabeth II in 2012 and in the same year he also received the title of “Knight of the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic”, from the hands of the then head of state Giorgio Napolitano.

Smile Orchestra

Jazz notes of Italian origin will also echo among the naves of Westminster Abbey thanks to the Smile Orchestra of Monterotondo, officially invited to play during the ritual. “The concert aims to be a musical tribute to the new English Sovereign and also an occasion to remember the eternal Queen Elizabeth II who has entered the hearts of people all over the world”, she declared to “The messenger” Catalin Montanaro, a young engineer from the Lazio town and director of the orchestra. The repertoire of the London concert in homage to the royals will naturally be full swing, but there will be no shortage of songs arranged in the British style by Maestro Montanaro. “The repertoire of the Smile Orchestra, able to distinguish it internationally, will revive the magical atmosphere of the swing era. The program includes the great classics of this genre such as “In the Moodby Joe Garland,Tuxedo Junctionby Erskine Hawkins andMoonlight Serenadeby Glenn Miller. For the occasion, however, a medley of traditional English music arranged by us, in a swing style, will be performed”, declared Montanaro.

Sergio Mattarella

Finally, the one who will be our official representative at the event could not be missing, the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella. It will be he, and not Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who will pay Italian tributes to the new English sovereign. President Mattarella had also been the Italian representative at the funeral of Elizabeth II which was followed, a few days later, by a “cordial telephone conversation” between the tenant of the Quirinale and that of Buckingham Palace. It is uncertain whether the president, on this occasion, will be accompanied by his daughter Laura, as happened on the trip to London in September.
