Ford Kuga 2023: all the details

Change the name, not the substance. Known overseas as Escape, the Ford Kuga 2023 it will be one of the most interesting innovations of next year under the Blue Oval brand. Introduced for the first time in 2008, a year after the presentation of the prototype at the Frankfurt Motor Show, the specimen has enjoyed a lot of success over the years. Now in generation number three, it will undergo the canonical mid-career restyling towards the middle of next year. Objective: to relaunch it in terms of sales. Because, with the outbreak of the Coronavirus and the war in Ukraine, it has marked a decisive decline. Mainly the fault of external circumstances, also bearing in mind a fact: in Russia it was the second best-selling car in the past.

The dark times experienced by the entire four-wheeler industry are, therefore, even worse in this case. Seeing the glass half full, he undoubtedly has the numbers to get back on top. The line is still popular today and the well-articulated engine range represents a further strong point. What direction will it take now? The designers seem to focus on both engines and technology. Both voices know how to influence the relevant public in a decisive way.

Consequently, a work performed in a workmanlike manner would increase the appeal of the commercial proposal. At the moment, the chances of finding a full-electric powertrain appear rather slim. Perhaps a bold step for what remains of the restyling of a vehicle introduced in dealerships in 2019. On the opposite side, the willingness of the Blue Oval House to support the ecological transition is well known. A necessary turning point especially in the Old Continent, in the light of the provisions of the European Commission. Moreover, the competitors are making large investments in low and zero emissions. Remaining indifferent to it would be tantamount to shooting oneself in the foot.

When asked “what features will the 2023 Ford Kuga have?” it’s easy enough to answer. The reason is obvious: indications come from the States, with the Escape. In fact, it’s the same car. The difference depends on a mere rebranding strategy. While Kuga is the name adopted in our continent, elsewhere (for example, in China, Australia and the USA) it is called Escape. But then let’s see what awaits us with the scheduled facelift.

exteriors

Starting from the exteriors, the front area will undergo a renovation. Thanks to the reveal of the Escape we know that a light strip unites the LED headlights and the mask grows in size. The fog lamp housings and the lower air intakes are then retouched. In general, the front is completely redesigned, which also implies a breath of fresh air for the fenders. On the contrary, there is a conservative approach to the “B side”. Here the only points to highlight concern the revised design of the lights, in an inverted “U” shape.

Interior

The second row sliding seat provides greater comfort for the occupants. Be that as it may, the most interesting efforts focus on the technological component. The 13.2″ instrument panel supports the 12.3″ digital infotainment system. Equipped with the new SYNC 4, the Ford Kuga 2023 (sorry, Escape) boasts compatibility with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. In addition, the navigation system is always connected to the network and OTA (over-the-air) updates are covered. Put simply, the updates (or at least a good part of them) will take place remotely, without going through an authorized workshop. The interior color is Ebony in the Base version, while it is also possible to opt for the Space Gray tone in the Active, Platinum and Plug-in Hybrid versions.

ADAS systems

The higher the trim level chosen, the richer the range of auxiliary driving systems will be. The Ford Kuga 2023 goes as far as level 2 autonomous driving. Between the 360° camera, the adaptive and predictive cruise control, the Lane Keeping Assistant System and more, the cabin resembles that of a spaceship from science fiction films. In order to avoid accidents, Co-Pilot 360 also operates, which includes Intersection Assist 2.0.

Engines

Turning to the engines, presumably the units of the Escape will be confirmed en bloc. Which includes the 180 HP 1.5 Ecoboost, the 250 HP 2.0 Ecoboost and the 190 HP 2.5 full hybrid. In relation to the choice made, the type of traction that can be used also differs. Finally, the family includes the 210 HP 2.5 Atkinsons cycle plug-in powertrain, with front-wheel drive and automatic CVT transmission. During the reveal of the Escape, the Stars and Stripes manufacturer did not comment on the technical specifications of the battery. The spokesmen have just talked about the range in full electric mode, equal to 37 miles, or about 60 km.

Plug-In Hybrid

Ford Kuga 2023

The plug-in hybrid solution features four different current modes, so that the driver can identify the configuration that best suits his needs:

  • Auto EV: the vehicle establishes whether to run on gas or electric;
  • EV Now: drivers have the option to set up full electric driving;
  • EV Later: motorists have the right to set the gas driving to subsequently exploit the km with zero emissions;
  • EV Charge: Drivers have the option to charge the battery during the journey, and then do it again at a later time.

In the ritual declarations released during the presentation of the Escape, the Detroit company highlighted the quality of the equipment. The implemented functions allow you to face everyday scenarios, shine in the city, navigate the urban jungle and indulge in leisure excursions. Brand manager Adrienne Zaski described the new Escape as the perfect getaway vehicle. From the generously sized touchscreens, compatible with both iOS and Android operating systems, to the sliding second row that provides more legroom, daily driving sessions are easy to manage. From meetings on the fly, to coffee runs with friends, to napping in the backseat, it’s suitable for any occasion, Zaski continued. Which you then explained what prompted Ford to prefer the hybrid. Apparently, not all customers are ready to make the electric transition. With two choices of hybrid powertrains, they manage to save money on both purchase and filling time at the gas station.

Ford Design director Amko Leenarts outlined the look. The Escape has been made more energetic, elegant and self-confident because the robust and boxy appearance of an SUV is not only received with positive opinions. The interiors reflect the identity transmitted outside. The relaxing space combines elegance and comfort, with easy access to technology while on the move or for keeping in touch with friends and family.

With the veil pulled up to the Escape, the stylistic choices of the Ford Kuga 2023 appear clear. Perhaps some changes will be made, but, barring surprises, they will be of a marginal nature. The essence will remain the same, in the hope of regaining the favor of the relevant public. The company’s purpose is to grind 150,000 registrations a year. There will be no upheavals to the exterior, mostly revised at the front, giving priority to equipment and the engine range. The appointment with full electric is postponed to the next generation. In the meantime, one can console oneself with the two plug-in hybrid units, an intriguing middle ground. The price still remains to be defined. In theory, there will be a slight increase over the current offer in dealerships
