2024 SCOTTISH NATIONAL OPEN SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS

Just days after revealing his heartbreaking diagnosis of an inoperable brain tumor, the 23-year-old Brit Archie Goodburn competed on the final day of the 2024 Scottish Open Swimming Championships.

Tackling his 50m breaststroke, Goodburn he set a time of 28.13 to clinch the national title. The time was almost the same as the 28.16 he recorded in the heats to win the seeding.

The Edinburgh swimmer ran a personal best of 27.19 in this race, a time he clocked to become the 2023 British champion and the third fastest Briton ever.

Speaking to Scottish Swimming after the final, Goodburn said:

I’m here to have fun.

To address the elephant in the room, about six weeks after surgery, I got in the pool and had a pretty consistent race twice, not bad, so I’m happy with what I did today.

I have made many mistakes, but my head is in a very busy moment, so we will accept them.

I mean we talk about teammates and friends, but I think we describe it as a family and it really is.

I have been completely overwhelmed by messages of support. It was amazing, so thank you everyone.
