The firefighters of Teramo and L’Aquila, with the collaboration of AIB teams of civil protection volunteers, intervened in Montorio al Vomano, in the Teramo area, in the hilly area that overlooks via Duca degli Abruzzi up to the Valle Cupa locality, for the brushwood fire already under control yesterday evening, but which was rekindled due to the strong wind.
The extinguishing operations were particularly complex due to the speed of advancement of the flames which overall affected an area of approximately 15 hectares. The Teramo Fire Brigade has recalled free shift personnel to duty. 25 firefighters worked on site with two fire engines, three off-road vehicles equipped with a fire-fighting module and three tankers for the water supply of the vehicles involved in the firefighting operations.
The intervention of the firefighters prevented the fire from reaching some homes near the flame front that advanced quickly due to the strong wind until it touched isolated homes and some apartment buildings. Several firefighter aircraft also operated on the scene of the fire, which in total made about 40 launches.
In particular, a Canadair, the “Drago 155” helicopter of the Pescara flight department and the Erickson S-64 “Cochise” helicopter located at the Preturo all’Aquila airport took part. The coordination of the aerial vehicles from the ground was entrusted to a DOS (Director of Fire Extinguishing Operations) of the Teramo Command. The Mayor and the Carabinieri of the Montorio al Vomano station went to the site to carry out their duties.
As a precaution, several residents of the buildings located in via Duca degli Abruzzi were evacuated. The intervention operations were attended by AIB volunteers from the Gran Sasso d’Italia Association, with the Sections of Montorio al Vomano, Bellante, Mosciano Sant’Angelo, Notaresco, Sant’Egidio alla Vibrata and Isola del Gran Sasso, volunteers from Cives di Teramo, ANA di Atri and Aquile del Parco di Pineto and the volunteer corps of Silvi. The intervention operations are still ongoing and during the night an active garrison will be maintained operational with AIB teams of civil protection volunteers.
