Calabria on the podium of undeclared work: the battle against gangmastering and exploitation

ROMA – The Cgil Calabria will be present with its categories and, in particular, with Flai Cgil Calabria at the demonstration called by the national CGIL against the system of gangmasters and exploitation in the fields that will be held in Latina on Saturday 6 July.

What happened to Satnam Singh is the tip of the iceberg of a system of enslavement and abuse of need that is still too present in our country. Calabria is not immune, indeed, with 19.6 percent of workers in black in relation to the total number of employed people and compared to the national average which is 11.3%, it is the Italian region with the highest presence of irregular employment (117,400 units) in the South. The Gioia Tauro plain, the study by Cgia di Mestre states, is one of the Italian areas where gangmastering is most widespread.

Together with the dozens of associations that have joined the protest, we will demonstrate to strongly demand, without ifs or buts, rights, dignity, health and safety at work. We ask the government to take firm positions that will actually contribute to combating exploitation, gangmastering and inhumane conditions, by eliminating those laws that fuel clandestinity, starting with the Bossi Fini law, in which people are forced to work in the agricultural sector and by enforcing those already existing ones that can have an impact on reducing the phenomenon.
